Bute needs to drop that belt after Pavlik. Even if it's not Mendy, it will be Curtis Stevens or Andrade or Bika, looking at the rankings... Bute made a mistake when he didn't drop the belt after Miranda to go up to fight Pascal! Who knows, if he had beaten Pascal, he could have faced Hopkins next and possibly even Dawson, and win or lose, he could have come back to 168 to face the winner of the 168 tournament or the loser of the final....because he'd still have been unbeaten at 168! ...but no, he just had to fight Brinkley...:-(
He was going to fight Dawson if he had won at at catchweight, but Pascal chose to fight Hopkins. The fight with Brinkley was signed long before Dawson and Pascal fought.
He just love his belt I'm not sure if Bute had win against Pascal he would had such offers! Pascal had a lots of offers because peoples see flaws in his game a think they can handle him!
I think he can work something with the IBF who probably don't want to lose Bute as their champion($$$).Let Mendy fight someone else. And Bute will fight Pavlik and someone from 175 at a catch-weight .
Pascal chose to fight Hopkins because Bute didn't want to fight Pascal at 175. Bute should still try to fight Dawson at catch-weight, even if it's high-risk/low reward. It's a better fight than Pavlik and it's sure as hell better than Stieglitz, Sartison, Mendy, etc.
A belt is only as good as the people you defend it against. It's just a trinket otherwise... everyone knows that, even Bute and even his most passionate fans! I agree with you about Pascal, but Bute could have offered them more money than Pascal can...
But you said Dirrell couldn't fight Bute (or Mendy) in March, because he wasn't ready... ...problem is: Mendy is still mandatory or at least mandatory contender in an eliminator to become mandatory challenger... so Dirrell would have to fight him in March to get to fight Bute later on!
Pascal is a easier fight than Bute. He said he want's to keep that belt 5 years(when he won it) Bute feels good at 168 specially since he negotiate a fight at 166(something that I personally didn't think he was able to do.)
