Frankly, I don't think that Vitali OR Ali are very good fighters because neither of them ever faced Dokes, page,Coetzee,Thomas,Tate,Tubbs or The Pope.

Thanks now that you've given me just enough encouragement, can I use this argument to bring down the legacies of Louis, Dempsey, Foreman, and everyone else? Hell, I don't even think Roberto Duran was a noteworthy champion without the scalps of Dokes,Page,Coetzee,Thomas,Tate,Tubbs,or Queen Elizabeth.

    It's called sarcasm.

Mr Magoo likes to inject a little levity into proceedings ,from time to time.

In his final 10 defense reign, I think about 6 of Ali's opponents were top 10. In all fairness he was very busy in the twilight of his career and followed an obvious pattern of Big Fight, Busy Fight, Big Fight on a global tour. This is actually pretty comparable to the pattern of Wlad's current reign, who is also looking for his 10th defense in just under 4 years.

Vitali's first two defenses were against top 10 but has had trouble finding ranked opponents since. To his credit he's kept busy but The WBC have been sitting on their thumbs, unable to determine a mandatory challenger until King got involved. Maybe Vitali can have better luck next year. As of now, he's more on par with Byrd's alphabet reign..who also had about 5 defenses and trouble getting fights made.

I don't think Bummy was making a direct comparision, just pointing out that few Champions ever defended against worthy contenders every night out. Its been a crap year for Vitali, but hopefully he can get better fights made in the future.

The two Ali challengers that Bummy mentioned , were both rated in the top 10 when he fought them, in the case of Wepner ,for the next year as well , in the case of Evangelista, for the next two years.
Briggs was no 5 in 1998 ,no 5 in 2006,since then, he has been unranked
The other fighters Bummy mentions in connection with Ali,were not challenging him for a world title, so there is no correlation between them.

I believe Evangelista was ranked after going the distance with Ali and KOing Coopman. But yes, he was briefly a top 10 fixture from there on.

I believe Dunn, Coopman, Shavers, and Evangelista were not recongized as top 10 at the time Ali defended against them. But it doesn't matter as Norton, Young, Lye, and Frazier was all top 5...so the man needed a break.

Dunn, Coopman ,and Shavers were not mentioned in connection with this thread
Briggs has not been rated for 3 years, which is not surprising, because he has done nothing to warrant it.

If Wepner was 8 it's because King and the alphabet's put him there to justify the title defense ... Wepner was tough and brave but a ham and egger .. the ratings were so manipulated in those days it was pathetic ... Wepner, Cooperman, Dunn and Evangelista were slipped in to justify defenses ... just like the seven fight Spinks ..
