interesting that he cites Dempsey and Wills as guys really schooled in the straight left. most people these days would have you believe he couldn't jab for ****.

Yeah. But then again, a Straight Left at the time wasn't what we would call a standard jab now. It was a power punch.

It's fascinating to see him mix the terms. We get a glimpse of how the term evolved.

Dempsey never called his straight left a "jab," terming it instead as a "jolt," disdaining the concept of "jabbing" in "Championship Fighting." He decked and knocked out people with it during his early career, and used one to drop Gunboat Smith in a minute during their final bout at the end of 1918.

I'm also pleased to see that Haislet's seminal 1940 college manual is also available here as a free PDF for all to enjoy and evaluate.

id love to see dempsey used that punch that he devoted an entire chapter to before talking about the conventional jab or hooks, bruce lee took thta punch from jack's book as well, jack talks about this punch a lot but weve never seen it in his films which is a shame.

I'm pretty confident Peerless Jim is talking about the original Jack "Nonpareil" Dempsey, from whom Bob Fitzsimmons won his middleweight title.

No, Jim's definitely referring to Manassa Jack, as evidenced by his use of the present tense in describing competitors then currently or recently active, rather than deceased in the previous century. From the preface, page 13:

    This content is protected

John Edward Kelly was not a contemporary of the latter 12 names on that roster of identified "straight lefters." Driscoll leads off those names with that of the reigning heavyweight champion, American by origin, whereas the Nonpareil was of Irish birth. (He's actually offering a revealing snapshot of prominence at the time of publication of the fourth revised edition.)

Driscoll does mention the Nonpareil in passing on page 34, but only in a list of names among the conquests of Fitzsimmons.

Ah, of course. Makes sense, really, considering Dempsey's passionate defence of the old left "jolt" in Championship Fighting.

"Fistic science, if backed by strength and intelligence,
ought always to beat brute force, and will even
triumph in a rough and tumble, although when the
rough and tumble arrives the scientific hero will
find that it is necessary to employ rough and tumble
methods as well as the more refined practice of the
ring and the gym. Science wins because the rapier
can be made to get home more frequently and more
accurately than the club. But it must get home to
good purpose Must draw blood, and consequently
must be both intelligently and forcefully directed."

interesting quotes on Frank Craig apparently the first successful slick African American fighter to hit the british shores...

"Craig used to leave himself to all appearances as wide open as any street, but his imitators omitted to notice that he had a peculiar knack of swaying or swerving his body out of danger whenever this threatened."

referring to British fighters who tried to imitate Craig:

"they were physically unable to develop either his long arms or the whipcord muscles which would seem to be a peculiarity of the coloured races."

Brilliant... thank you... I was reading jack dempseys book and would like to learn how to throw the left jolt or left straight... makes sense... could just feint instead of 'swatting' with a jab. A knockout blow from both hands would be devestating
