Who is your all time favourite boxing commentator. Mine has to be "Get in there Frank" Harry Carpenter closely followed by his ITV rival Reg Gutteridge far far better than any of todays commentators.
Think it was harry that called the hagler hearns fight an although it sounded great i think the american version was much better. Don't know his name tho
In the past, Don Dunphy and Howard Cosell. In the late 70's, early 80's , CBS had the team of Gil Clancy and Jerry Quarry, with Tim Ryan, they were excellent. Sean O'Grady was good on the USA fights. Ice Man Scully is also very good, just not on a lot of broadcasts. One ancient, drunken, slurring Larry Merchant is worth 20 wide eyed, spastic Max Kellermans. I get douche chills from some of the things Lampley says , like "man love", but he's usually entertaining and informative.
I always thought Joe Mesi had a knack for commentating. He has a good tone to his voice, not annoying and doesn't act like he knows it all (Kellerman). Lampley has a good voice for commentating, just too emotional for me. Merchant is great with interviews, but rarely talks during the broadcast. Though his funny close up analysis before the fight are quite comical, and often times dont make any sense.
The English commentator for the Julian Jackson/Harol Graham fight was awesome! Talking about how well Graham was doing, then blam! "Oh no! Just what we were worried about!"
I like Tessatore...someone needs to take Atlas into that "dark room" and beat him senseless. He's better at the pre-fight analysis than commentating during the fight.
