Harris has never been the same since that Maussa fight and I believe he was on a decline leading up to it. His chin is now completely shot. Steward has some of his biggest accomplishments in the 90's. Holy, Chavez, Hearns, Mcall, Lewis, etc. Its hard to say what affect Steward had on Hamed, because Hamed never was good enough to beat Barrera. He could get away with all those mistakes against lessor threats and he knew it, thats why he looked to make a change when he decided to fight the better stronger fighters. Cintron and Harris were never that good in my opinion. Harris was a better fighter than Cintron, but Cintron never had the ability. Taylors problems were with fitness and mental fortitude long before Steward hooked up with him. Sure he could hang with a slow paced old Hopkins, but even limited fighters like Pavlik and Froch who pushed the pace on him got him eventually. I dont know of any trainer thats had success with every fighter hes ever worked with, but Stewards accomplishments far outweigh his "so called" failures for me.
The Winky Wright fight was their first together. I think HBO did a bit too much hyping of Taylor before we saw what he really had. He was simply never that good.
Emmanuel ranks with the very best, ever. There is no disputing that: He is good for 95% of the men he works with. I'm talking a particular fight. I'm a Manny fan. But he blew the Pavlik defense in a huge, huge way. He had Taylor well conditioned, enthusiastic, and actually listening to instructions. His fighter nearly blew the enemy away in the 2nd. And he just gave about every wrong instruction he could have. A rare miss.
He told everyone who would listen Grant was in over his head their first fight together and the only reason they had to take a tough first challenge was because he had an HBO contract. He was stopped in one round by Jameel Mcline.
Teddy Atlas is the most overrated trainer ever. He picks up fighters who have already been developed and then typically sends their career into a nosedive while attempting to hog all of the fighters press to himself.
Yeah that definitely had an affect on him. I dont think Atlas is overated though. He did pretty good with Michael Moorer and Junior Jones. He knows boxing, hes just a little over the top. I actually think his type of personality melds better with a well skilled schooled fighter, because he can motivate and use his psychology on them, he just cant lie, and he has to express his strong opinion if he doesnt agree on something, and that was probably the worst things he could say about Grant coming off the Lewis fight. A guy who isnt sure of his ability is going to have problems with Atlas' mind games.
I think Atlas is a really good trainer, but yeah - he's got to have that connection with the fighter for it to work, otherwise it backfires spectacularly. Grant isn't a fighter that I've ever really followed or studied his history, but looking at his record I've no idea why whoever was handling him felt he was ready for Lennox Lewis at that time. I know he beat Golota but still..... he's the biggest mental midget in the sport's recent history.
They did the same thing against SRL imo,though Marv had gone back a bit by then . The Bros were far too laid back in the Leonard fight, whoever you think won , it was close ,they carried on as though Marvin was running away with it.Should have lit a fire under his arse.imo.
