No matter how Hopkins/Pascal turns out, most people agree that Hopkins is an all time great, a living legend, and one of the very best middleweights in history. When Hopkins finally says good night, around the year 2313, he will have shown us exactly what he could and could not do.

That's not really the case with Calzaghe. Joe left to many things open to debate, and much of his "greatness" depends on specualtion.

There's a lot more to boxing than being a "technician."

guy doesnt have a point at all.

beating faded champions after they have lost their crown isn't the same as beating them in their prime.

as for the second part of your question - we'll never know because joe never put himself in the same position.

Ah yes, the great Robert Allen/cherrypick little guys legacy. The significance of such a legacy does not yet have a word to describe it.....

you can't get fights against HOF smaller guys who want to test themselves at higher weights unless you're a fighter of notoriety and on the world stage to begin with...since i'm guessing you're wanting to highlight that in relation to joe somehow....

I'm not much on either Bhop or Joe. Infact I really never cared much for either fighter. That being said Joe at least succeeded the few times he was up against a formidable foe. Just about everytime Bhop was challenged he failed horribly. Fighting men his own size you've got Tarver and a green Glenn Johnson in the win column. Joe's "tests" against Lacy, Kessler, Eubank all hold more crediblity and significance.

no they don't because joe never beat a proven world class fighter in his prime.

joe and hopkins both dominated poor divisions for years but they were both terrific fighters, but the big difference is joe avoiding the world stage until his two 'nemesis' fighters lost their titles and their youth before claiming wins over them.

it's not a coincidence that out of all the champions of the last so mahy years no HOF fighter has left his division to challenge calzaghe.

since i lived in denmark for 5 years and trained in the same gym as him and talked to him occasionally, yeah i think i do.

do you know why he fired mogens palle when the edison miranda fight was on offer?

kessler was the best challenger to calzaghe because he fought and beat the contenders and a better class of opposition than joe did leading up to that fight.

but kessler isn't a PROVEN world class fighter, he's a best of the rest and since he isn't going to win the super six that isn't going to change.

so neither is joe's legacy, is it?

Actually a convincing win for Hopkins enhances Calzaghe's legacy, as well as his own.

Hopkins destroying two young champs after having to resort to a lot of holding and spoiling just to be competitive with Calzaghe, will speak volumes of Joe's eliteness.

Whether Hopkins ranks higher than Joe is up to personal opinion. Hopkins is probably ahead of Joe on most peoples lists though. Doesn't change the fact Joe was a truly great fighter with one of the toughest head to head styles to beat.

don't you think the flip side of that is hopkins decking joe, after joe waited for hopkins to hit 40 and lose his mantle twice, speaks volumes for bernard's elitness?

Joe signed to fight Hopkins in 02, so that's not true. And Hopkins was clearly still an elite fighter, beating Tarver and Wright before the Calzaghe fight, and schooling Pavlik immediately after is proof. He gave Joe his toughest fight, even if it wasn't all by legal means.. but had it been a few years earlier and Hopkins has the confidence and stamina to fight a bit more, Joe probably outpoints him in a lot easier fashion.
