Hello, This is my first lame attempt to post a video of myself doing some shadow boxing. I would love to read your comments on my technique so far if you can see the video properly i.e. I apologise for the video quality, maybe I'll post a better video with a punching bag or something. I have just been training for 2 months. Appreciate it all. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DtL0F8Ok4k[/ame]
I think you look great for 2 months. I was trained upon the premise that you can't tell somebody everything at once so for my .02 I would say to work on turning your punches over and not get too square in your stance. Think about your front shoulder dividing the middle of your visualized opponent when shadowboxing or the bag. Others may say you need to relax, move your head, sit down on your punches, and so forth, but I feel that is a learning curve that simply comes more naturally from repetition and time. Therefore, don't get overwhelmed with correcting everything at once. Keep it up:good
First off, not bad for only been training for two months.. The main critique i have is: extend your jab further lift up your elbow when you hook push your shoulder a little more sideways, it will be hella uncomfortable at first though.. good luck!
Thanks for the encouragement. I know I get square on my stance but that is what my coach taught me..to be a bit square...is it because I am new? I will keep on practising.
Thanks for the kind words. The jab: Sometimes when we do mitt work, my coach stands a bit close to me which does not let me extend my jab or lock it completely, I think that's what stuck in my head. I need to practise the hook with lifted elbow, I did that and realised the difference. I just want to be good at it therefore I am dedicated to learn and improve.
for a couple months it really isn't bad all in all. im strongly against the way you throw that swooping uppercut thing to the body though. with so much swoop it winds up being telegraphed. and it also should snap a lot more. and you said that your coach stands too close to you so you cant extend that jab. you may want a new coach.
Remember that when you throw the hook, the body moves from pivoting your feet. The arm doesn't move. Footwork looked correct. Keep your hands against your face. If there is a gap between your gloves and head, your head/hands will rattle all over when you get hit. Easier to take a shot with your hands tight against your head. Also, exhale or grunt when you throw your punches, and remember to breathe or you will gas out.
About pivoting with the left hook i agree with the others, but on a totally different point please tell em that wasn't you top speed! I may be wrong but i've always shadow boxed at full speed and my advice would be to speed it up.
Don't speed it up. Get in the mirror and perform the punches at a moderate pace and pay attention to your mechanics. Speed will come when mechanics improve. As far as left hook, I think it is the hardest punch to learn in boxing. Doing the punches "one at a time in front of a mirror" was probably the best advice given yet. Lastly, no I don't think he tells you to stand square because you are new. If your coach says stand square, then don't take my advice. He is there with you. Just make sure he has legitimate and boxing knowledge, as there are some stinkers out there.
Thanks for the input. I agree with the you but I haven't been practising my uppercuts at all. I think in a fight/sparring session, If I decide to do an uppercut, I'll be done! I am going to ask my coach why he stands so close.
Thanks for this. I practised it with what you said, need to practise more to get the body/feet hook in sync. Yes, there is a bit of a gap between the hands and the head. I will make sure there is none. I need to practise breathing as well, sometimes I do breathe and sometimes I don't...it's not consistent.
