do you really think a hopkins - calzaghe fight wouldn't have gone ahead if the 'risk-reward' factor wasn't so one-sided?

this is the 'what if' argument all over again with euro fighters who don't try their luck overseas.

instead of saying "joe probably outpoints him in a lot easier fashion" when he claimed to have a fear of flying all these years..a fear he overcame once roy and bernard lost their titles by the way - don't you think he should have fought them in their prime instead?

Hopkins agreed to fight Calzaghe for 3 million back then, but later backed out asking for double that. The fight would've happened if Hopkins hadn't backed out.

And don't get it twisted. Roy and Hopkins were the ones who had nothing to lose when Joe gave them a shot. Funny how easy it was to make those fights when Joe was on top and calling the shots.

 

joe was never on top and calling the shots..he was on top in the SMW division but he was a faded name overseas and people didn't know who he was.

that's why i said do you really think that fight wouldn't have happened if it wasn't a high risk, low reward fight for hopkins....

 

But it wasn't low reward. How many times did Hopkins make a 3 million dollar payday in his career? Maybe 2-3 times, and probably none before the fight was first discussed.

And Joe was at the top of the heap from 168-175 in the pound for pound rankings having just beat Kessler, when he agreed to fight Hopkins. He was more well known than he ever was worldwide, which is why GBP offered him 8 million to make the fight.

Calzaghe cannot be compare to Bernard Hopkins.

Hopkins is on a different level

 

If this wasn't a windup it wouldn't be as funny but it would still be funny.

 

Lets be honest, Bernard has fought so many flawless fights against the so called futures of boxing "Pavlik" lets remind all of the Calzaghe fans, He won't go past 3 with "Pavik" because "Pavlik" is to young and hits to hard, wait no he got schooled the Hopkins that fought Calzaghe wasn't the same Hopkins that fought Trinidad for example, he took Calzaghe to lightly and didn't think the amateurish style of Joe would even score more effectively than his hard counters.

PS if he beats Pascal Calzaghe fans can't say **** because he openly dodged Chad Dawson and all of the other young fighters coming through

 

I cant see anyone arguing that Joe is greater even if Hopkins loses to Pascal.Joe was a good fighter but Hopkins has achieved far more.

You want to think that Bhop would have won in his "prime"? Wishful thinking. You want to think that JC would have won if they fought earlier? Wishful thinking.

Talking about the possible Calzaghe fight in 2002, it would have been a couple of hundred thousand under Hopkins' biggest payday, against Trinidad, but it was far more than he earned against any other opponent around that time. It was a fair deal, definitely.

Hopkins clearly wanted nothing of Calzaghe or Jones in that time period, despite the generous offers. He has a very selective resume.

 

Yeah it was possible that those fights could've got done but Hopkins still fought a prime RJJ & a past-prime but still good Calzaghe I'll give him that. I feel a prime RJJ would've always had his number. A Calzaghe-Hopkins fight would've always been hard to look at but I'm uncertain how one would've gone earlier.

 

anyone claiming Joe C has a better legacy has little to back it...BHOP is a top 50

 

Calzaghe wanted RJJ and Hopkins before he became a household name in the U.S. He wanted both around 2002, but no way in hell was he going to get a shot at either of them at that time. He was a high risk low reward until both Hopkins and RJJ decided to give him a shot.

Either way Calzaghe and Hopkins are probably both in the top 3 fighters from the last 20 years. Both are all time greats, just the fact that Hopkins is still doing meaningful things in 2009-2010 shades him a little ahead of JC at this point.

JC missed more guys than B-Hop, but a lot of guys didn't want JC either.
Hopkins would have never gotten Holmes/Joppy and Tito if not for the Middleweight tourney.

Both Hopkins and Calzaghe were high risk low reward champions for most of their career. And both will be missed in a few years.
