Marciano is expected to see that he is out cold and being supported only by the ropes in the half second after he landed his right hand and threw the left hook?
It's the referee's call to say when a fighter on the ropes is down or not. Marciano's job is to throw punches at an opponent who is on the ropes.
This is weird actually, it's a case of something looking absolutely horrible and wrong (like MMA wrong) but seems to be within the rules. I have to agree though, Marciano can't be expected to look after Walcott (would have been wonderful if he had though).
If I remember Wlad's mastered the clinch and I think he really grabs over Peters arms. I'll admit Peter (Or Peters?) doesn't fight well when he gets held but I don't really expect much from Peter. Still bothersome to me. But yeah Teddy Atlas says exactly what you said... I guess he stole it. Peter is hardly capable of much, though, but he tried. If I remember correctly Wlad was warned for holding in the first fight which was in America I think. I don't think he held more in the first fight either. As for JJ, well no doubt. But boxing was definitely just different back then. But then again, the Marquess of Queensberry rules came long after that too. More to the point that champions seem to do what they can.
I'll be honest, I dont even think it looks that bad. It's not nice but I seen a lot worse. It's part of the game. You could call it a late stoppage. I dont believe it needs to be used to condemn Marciano or fair game to be added to his repertoire of fouls. If you dont like that, you wont like this. This is a much worse case : [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzOo_RLNoyU[/ame] And here's Mercer's KO of Morrison, with his own commentary on the replay : 1:20 [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpdeONftgaA[/ame]
You know a Marciano trademark I love so much that never gets discussed? He's one of the only fighters I've seen that runs back to the neutral corner so the ref can start or continue his count with interruption or an extra pause. And he doesn't do it in celebration, but to assure that his opponent gets counted out quicker. That's how badly he wants to win... he'll take every fair minute advantage he think he can. I love that Marciano does that. Did timekeepers start the count for the ref to pick up at that time? I wonder if Marciano didn't know of this. Still amusing to me.
maybe the rules were different but i was always told a fighter being held up by the ropes is down. still, you're right. it's the ref's place to make that call. the fighter needs to keep throwing until the ref instructs him not to.
Unforgiven, Yeah, I hate both of those. And you don't have to stay in the HW division. If you "don't think it looks that bad" though...one of histories most feared punchers hitting an unconscious man with a hard punch...don't know what to say to that.
Hate that Cooney KO of Norton. Actually always liked the Mercer-Morrison KO. Just found it amusing, although Mercer even says "Ref let it go on too long the guy could've been killed."
His toes have to be up. In other words he has to be falling into the ropes (Although this isn't always called). Think Marquez vs Vasquez III. I actually dislike when refs call this a knockdown sometimes as I feel that fighters that wobble into the ropes at times possibly could've kept up unless they blatantly grab on to the ropes Rocky style. But it always seems to keep for a more interesting fight (Ali v Frazier I round 11). In the end it's the refs job to make that "call." Sometimes is still may be wrong, but not illegal.
I watched this fight closely. Lastarza was out boxing Marciano and doing well in the early rounds. Then Rocky landed a mean left hook on a break. Later on there was a very low blow. Both fouls did more damage to Lastarza than any of rocky's legal shots up to that point in the fight. I do believe the fouls shots turned the tide, then Marciano came on. The Cockell fight also had its share of fouls. Yeah, Marciano was a dirty fighter, but because he was popular, active and threw wild shots, he avoided the DQ as a pro. The Rock once was DQ'd in an amateur match when he was not in shape. He kicked the opponent. Where is unclear. Some sources say the groin, others say the stomach. I think 1 DQ loss under modern rules would be likely for Marciano.
Brilliant finish by Mercer. Brutal and late stoppage though. I think Mercer was being genuine too. It just goes to show how a fighter can reflect on it a few minutes later when watching, but there's no way he should be expected to make the call while the fight is on. He's just throwing punches at a hurt opponent, that's what he's supposed to do, until the fighter is down, or the referee calls it off.
