Which non-great fighter has the style to trouble a great fighter?

Chris Byrd would give most HWs from the past trouble. At his best he only lost to big punching monsters

 

Norton would never have been an easy fight for even the mythical Ali of 1968 and 1969. Muhammad may have been able to produce a clear cut UD, but Ken still would have been a more difficult challenge for him than Chuvalo, Terrell and Mildenberger put together. (In fact, Norton may have been more difficult for a peak Ali than a challenge by Frazier would have been in 1968 or 1969. As it is, Ken was indeed more demanding of a prime Ali in their 1973 Inglewood rematch than Joe was in 1974.)

Melio Bettina may have posed some major headaches for Louis. As the Bomber himself pointed out after his career, he never even sparred with a southpaw, let alone compete against one. (By inference, this is as close as he ever came to admitting that he ducked anybody.) As it is, he did stop Tiger Jack Fox and Fred Apostoli, went 1-1-1 with Jimmy Bivins, and the difficulties he presented to Billy Conn are documented on film. How successful would Bettina have been fighting out of the orthodox stance?

 

Cellestino Cabellero would be hell for anyone ranging between bantamweight and junior bantamweight, and even a good bunch of great featherweights. I could see him pushing guys like Zarate, Gomez, Chucho Castillo, Pintor, and Harada to the limit maybe even pulling off a win.

 

Sammy Angott over Willie Pep. Angott had the antidote basically in dealing with Pep.

 

Paul Williams . Theres not many guys would enjoy fighting a 6,2 welterweight with longer reach than Ali .

 

If he would fight tall I´d agree.

 

Ive always felt that a young Ray Mercer would give Tyson fits.

 

I remember having high hopes for Ray when he first turned pro and I even scored the Lennox fight for him. Disappointing turn out on the guy but he had a good thudding punch and an iron jaw at least.

 

Really? I think he's mediocre. Levels below a guy like Jibaro Perez, so say nothing of those you listed.

 

Mercer would give post-prison Tyson fits.

Michael Moorer- This southpaw with a cannonball left would give some greats problems.

David Tua- Any guy with one-punch KO power and a head/neck made for absorbing punishment is a potential problem for smallish HWs.

Jerry Quarry- Slick, game counterpunchers are nightmares for modern heavies.
