Kampmann won rounds two and three in my eyes. This isn't a ju jitsu match and position means little (not nothing, but very little) if you don't do anything with it. What's the difference between mounting a guy and being in his guard if you don't do any damage in either? Dana White doesn't pick the judges, the athletic commision does and Kampmann made some tactical errors that probably cost him the fight in the judge's eyes. Regardless, 30-27 Shields is an outrage because there should be no debate that Martin won round 2 and I thought it was clear that he won rounds 2 and 3. Also, more than ever, it is clear that Shields has NOTHING on Georges St. Pierre.
Fitch gets dogged man, assuming GSP wins let Fitch have a shot and let Shields take on Condit to prove he's worth a shot. Even though I thought he won tonight, he needs another fight to get used to the weight again before going near GSP
This is a real grey area, they'll always favour the guy on top, especially in mount and for good reason, but what I don't like is when a fight is in the guard position and the guy on the bottom is active and looking for submissions and the guy on top is laying and praying they'll still favour the fighter on top for stalling (controlling). Even though Shields didn't inflict damage from the mount (and Kampman even escaped on several occasions) Kampmann can't let himself get into that position and expext the judges to judge him favourably.
Shields was actively looking to improve position and go for submissions too. It was effective control.
And you've got to understand that Kampman is hard to keep down and control like that. He really proved his worth when he dominated Thiago.
True. Kampmann is overall better and more entertaining than shields. GSP-Kampmann would be a far better fight than boring and ineffective Shields in Gsp-shields.
Kampman really showed how hard he is too control on the ground, but clearly not enough to get a decision. I'm a bit disapointed with Shields, he seemed to gas very early, perhaps welterweight isn't his division physically, or maybe "octagon jitters" was the problem lol
Shields has way more chance against GSP, because he has an area he's better than GSP in. GSP is better than Kampmann at everything. I still think GSP takes Jake, but if it hits the mat it could get interesting.
What judges will favor and what Kampmann should have done are really irrelevant to my broader point which is that advancing position is in no way winning a fight. I understand that MMA is a sport and that it must be scored in some way but I 100% disagree that advancing to a mount position is winning in a fight. All advancing position does is give you a greater chance to be successful at doing the things that ACTUALLY are winning in a fight, landing effective strikes and attempting submissions. There is a REAL problem when people say, basically, "Yes, Kampmann won the FIGHT but he didn't win on the scorecards." In professional mixed martial arts actually causing more damage and, frankly, WINNING should count more than being in a "dominant" position. A dominant position is only dominant if you actually dominate your opponent in it.
It was a **** fight!! Neither did **** to the other. They should have both gotten the loss.. It was a close fight that doesn't matter because GSP would **** them both up, probably at the same time..
Not really. Fitch isn't a draw, and he hasn't changed his game from his last fight with GSP. Nobody is clamoring for the rematch, so you can expect them to put it off for as long as possible if it ever happens.
