Lol that's cool. Greb fought over 300 times and only lost about 15 and he beat and knocked out much bigger men in an original 8 era. As a middleweight he beat no less then 7 world lighthev champions including Loughran, Rosenbloom and handed Tunney his only loss. A shame their is so little footage of him just like their is of Robinson at 147.
I would think not but have not checked. I heard several years ago that the Walker fight may be in someones attic but nothing came to light. I think theirs only 2 fights of Robinson in existence of his time at 147. Shame.
I think the highest he can possibly be rated is at #5. I would definitely have Monzon, Greb, Hagler and Robinson ahead of him.
Well while the facts maybe correct it's the context you have put them in. You discredit Hopkins reign by pointing out his best victories were against smaller fighters. But some of Haglers and Monzons best victories were against smaller fighters like Duran, Hearns, Napoles and Griffith. Do you rate Haglers and Monzon's reign at middleweight with similar comtempt? Also Hopkins victory against Tarver proved size meant nothing his skill was enough to beat a bigger man than himself. As for the draw with Mercado, do you know the circumstances behind that fight? Hopkins took the fight at short notice, the fight was at almost 10,000 feet above sea level. Do you know the effects of such a high altitude upon athletic performance? Hopkins was under prepared, and facing a fighter who could perform and his best as Mercado was used to training and fighting at altitude. As for the loss to Jones that was before he won the title, and for christ sake it's Roy Jones the man was phenomenal. The losses to Taylor were when he was 40. Should we discredit Robinson who was losing to Gene Fulmer and Denny Moyer at a similar age? Was Hopkins reign at middleweight outstanding? No of course not but it was good in terms of longevity and dominance and earns him a place as a top 5 middleweight.
This right here is the truth!!! People fail to realize that hops wanted to break the record of title defenses so bad that when his body was ready to move up he stayed at middle for the record! Hops hit hard when his body was healthy at middle but when he started forcing himself at the weight you could see that his power began to deminish as wel as his endurance at that weight. Him(hops) movin up right after the taylor fight to beat tarver easily proved how much his body was desperately ready for more weight. Remember also that a lot of these fans today dont look at hops older fights and just go on what they know like the taylor fights or the howardeastman fight but lil do they know he was actually the exicutioner for many years who never ever showed signs of tiring or fatigue
I'd find it difficult to rank him behind anyone but Greb, Robinson, Monzon and Hagler at the weight. He had a great period of dominance at the weight and unified all the belts one by one so his accomplishments at the weight are up there with anybodies, maybe he accomplished more at the weight than anybody else ever has. And technically, he's got the style and intangibles to give anybody a fight. He could probably beat anybody at the weight if he were to fight them twice, even Monzon and Hagler. Resumé is where he's a bit lacking though.
Felix Trinidad, Keith Holmes, William Joppy, John Jackson are good wins Glen Johnson didn't belong at Middleweight, doesn't have one significant win there. Middlweight was way too big for Oscar. He has a win over Felix Sturm but it was a robbery. Syd Vanderpool and Lupe Aquino are pretty good wins. Simon Brown was shot and a smaller fighter who didn't belong at middleweight. Maybe if Hopkins faced Pavlik at middlweight he would have had a stronger resume there. But he faced him at a catch weight of 170.... Robinson, Hagler and Greb are clearly over him.
