Ali had a better chin than Holmes

Holmes took a better right hand. It was a more overhand right that was set up and he had full leverage behind it. With Ali, he had to sort of lean in with it and it wasn't set up aswell, and the main thing was Ali was circling to his right so Shavers was a bit square on and didn't get maximum leverage on it.

Ali had a better chin than Holmes though, no doubt, even if Holmes had a very solid chin of his own. But the video doesn't prove much at all.

 

Ive never heard anyone say otherwise. Whist Holmes had an excellent chin also, i think its futile to argue one was better than the other. They both had great chins

 

Most ludicrous evidence to justify a point i have ever seen.
The holmes punch was bang on.
The ali punch was not clean as muhammed moved his head back.
Just shows that people see what they want.

For the record Ali is harder all round to stop than holmes because of even better survival skills,clowning and such like. Both had super chins,but holmes was more vulnerable to the right than ali was to his slight bogey,the left hook. Cant really see anyone stopping Ali. Peak mike tyson might account for peak holmes.

 

Holmes was in the wrong place at the wrong time for that big shot of Shavers..that can happen to anyone, as it did for Ali the first time vs Henry Cooper...but yes I believe that Ali's chin was better than Holmes.

Larry said he saw a flash from what he thought was a lightbulb, but was really him getting drilled by a flush Shavers right hand. I don't recall ever seeing the heavens statement.

 

Holmes also said that it was the hardest he had ever been hit, all of Shavers's oponents say that they've never been hit harder. Does that mean they all took the exact same punch?

 

Yeah this sounds like a good way to put it. Both had proven chins, Ali was past his best facing Foreman and pulled it off. He took some shots but he was really smart about it and didnt take as much plus he fought dirty with a lot of holding on the neck ect to tire foreman. Regardless of his chin if he didnt have that strategy he would have been stopped but he was able to avoid taking the shots that others like fraizer and norton did.

 

It was a hard right hand that Ali took, but do you think Shavers only landed one hard right hand on Holmes? For Holmes to say that the right hand Shavers decked him with was harder than the punches he took from Tyson, Cooney, Mercer, McCall, Weaver, Witherspoon, Roy "Tiger" Williams, etc does that prove that the right hand Shavers landed was the hardest? No. I'm just saying that Shavers himself said that the hardest right hand he ever landed was the one the dropped Holmes.

As has been stated earlier, the circumstances of when the punches landed were much different. Holmes was moving into the power but Ali was moving away. Holmes didn't see the punch comming but Ali did. Ali rolled with the punch at the last second, Holmes just took it full on the jaw.

 

Exactly. Bear in mind too Ali fought Liston x 2, Frazier x 3 and Foreman at his peak. Holmes never had anything remotely like this array of danger. If he got thru the 6 fights above without at least a KD i'd be shocked.

 

i think anyone whos been around a while would agree ali's chin was better then holmes.ali was down 4 times but really only 3 wepner was standing on his foot the ref never caught it

 

That's it, also Ali got hit more cleanly, more often, than Holmes during their title reigns too (Ali 2nd reign, of course). Ali definitely has the better chin, but we're probably talking A vs A-
