that his gimick.i find he a bit tiresome but ocassionally he has a good article, his stringray awards are good tho
Dan Rafael and Michael Rosenthal. Their base level of competence is dwarfed by the biased twaddle they write.
OK...I'm no fan of...anybody who lives in Tiny Town, UK, and has never boxed and writes for free on a website and writes only about Mayweather or Duran's great fights and never gives the local amateurs in his area a hit...that is annoying...by the way in the 80s and 90s when I was 'skirting' the issues I managed to get banned by a few promoters, including the ABA, attacked by a few parents, sued in court (Duff), the subject of hate mail from the far right (the police became involved) and I was often given the shite seat...it's called serving your time. Adios.
Don't get too carried away. There are some writers out there (like me) that have been in the ring, that have had amateur fights, that do write for free coz no-one has the budget to pay and has covered his local club and up and coming stars in his area and his country. Oh, and I've never once wrote a Duran or Mayweather article. I interviewed Hagler last year and nothing has topped that yet. I'm plying my trade right now and it's a long, hard ****ing slog with little to show on my bank statement.
You mean asks the questions others won't, gets more fans, fighters and promoters togther in one hour than anyone else...:think He does what many writers don't do and that is listen to the punters, its a fine art that he has mastered that only others can look up to now...:yep Look at the Radio Show, Boxing Hour, Website Podcasts, you request it, he will try and get it on for the punters...:good Gives the right amount of time and coverage to the amateurs, on the basis that somebody has someone.... why write about 3 fighters in 600-800 words when you can write about 15 and enable everyone to go out and "read all about it"... that is what galvanises amateur clubs, its how scrap books are started...:deal SplitDecision, when Buncey stops skating round the issues and gets to the point let me know, I will have to read it...:huh
I think Steve's point is more directed at people who are Boxing writers when it suits them/when it seems glamorous to be one. As opposed to folks like yourself who graft away because they love the sport and want to see it thrive.
Dan Rafael, he acts like a child with his rants that look like he's been reading the general forum, poor excuse for a journalist
Get carried away? I tell wannabe writers each and every week to start at the bottom and they look at me like I'm mad and direct me to 3,000 words on Colombia's African fighters on loveboxingscrotumscratch.com. And on the subject of working for free...don't! I've not had any boxing in the Independent for two months because they have no money. It's simple. So Uppercut (and you are right there are exceptions) here are a few more ideas to try: Contact promoters and write their releases, offer local rags copy at 1960s prices, try and get a syndicated local group of papers to take your 200 word 'Where are they Now' column once each month...do anything but don't write for FREE. It will f### everything up in the future, trust me. Adios.
Dan Rafael is awful. Vivek Wallace on ESB frustrates me. He's an excellent writer, but his bias towards the Mayweathers on the Pac/May issue, really brought the quality of his pieces down.
