Chavez didn't want to get embaressed again and not being in ignorant ass Texas where they would give him a gift again.
What other slick fighters schooled a prime Chavez? Anyway, after the Randall loss, I don't think a re-match made much sense to anyone.
Yep. And i love how everyone is taking jabs at Chavez here, tell me this: Who the **** looks good against a prime/near prime Whitaker??? Even in '97 when Pea was fading, he still managed to give a prime peaked Oscar hell. No shame at all getting outboxed by Pernell Whitaker.
Whitaker was one of the best fighters I've ever seen. He made guys like Azumah Nelson look ordinary and guys like Haugen and Ramirez look like they'd never been in a boxing ring before. There's definitely some re-writing of history going on with Chavez. If you read some of the posts on here, you would think he was some face-first brawler with no defence who didn't know how to fight slick fighters. On his way to 87-0, he fought every type of fighter - boxers, brawlers, south-paws, whatever. He also had an excellent ability to slip and roll with punches, especially on the inside.
Yep. People are acting as if losing a close fight (to Pernell Whitaker of all people...) means you're a bum. Comical. There isn't a fighter in history who wouldn't have some problems with Whitaker.
Taylor lost, spent some time in hospital and by the end of the fight, looked like he'd been in a car crash. Whatever you think of the stoppage, Chavez did a hell of a lot of damage in the midst of being "schooled".
Only because Meldrick Taylor stood and fought him. Still outboxed him and had to be robbed by King and his goons.
So Chavez gets no credit for all his damaging punches? It was Taylors fault for standing and fighting? Did "King and his goons" put Taylor in the hospital, or was that Chavez' punches?
The great JLC was lucky to get a draw. 147 wasn't really neither Whitaker's or Chavez's best or natural fighting weights, but Sweet Pea had much more success at the higher weights than Chavez did. Whitaker was schooling fighters up to 154lbs. This fight would of been even better at 135. At that weight it's a pickem. But over 135, Whitaker simply the better fighter.
