How come there wasn't a Whitaker/Chavez rematch?

According to ODLH's book and numerous other sources, by that time JCC was blowing off training to stay out all night doing hookers and blow, wearing fur coats and clubbing it up non-stop. He was still good to go as far as his physical capabilities go, but he wasn't working hard and his head was already out of the game. I don't think he wanted to go thru a training camp hard enough to prepare for that fight.

As far as the Taylor fight goes, Taylor was boxing and JCC was fighting. Taylor did a great job for as long as he could, but the damage finally caught up to him. He didn't respond to the referee and he was obviously just beat all the **** up and out of the fight. The ref is NOT the timekeeper, and if he were to say 'well, I would stop the fight any OTHER time but I won't NOW because it's almost over', that would be a robbery going the other way.

Steele did his job the way it's supposed to be done. Sucks for Taylor, if he could have stayed on his feet or if he had had the mental wherewithal to respond to the ref, he would have won, but he didn't. Case closed, and it really shouldn't be that controversial.

JCC, record made it nearly impossible to beat him without Koing out cold. Even though, most of JCC wins came against fighters coming of the street making weight. All in all Whitaker beat JCC from rounds 1-12 and Meldrick Taylor won a more competitive bout. JCC was a damn good fighter but he got some big time gifts when he was fighting.

that's a convenient argument for you to use. in that sense, you can say Oscar only beat him when he was a "shell." **** off with that, because almost all of his previous 87 fights were against cab drivers he knocked out in the first few rounds. Pernell schooled Chavez and got robbed, plain and simple

Only "gift" he got was the Whitaker fight...Many ATG's have had gifts, Chavez is no exceptin, so **** off with all that. The whole Chavez hating still hasnt away i see...I remember back in the day when Chavez was on top pf the boxing world, he'd have a shitload of haters..Mostly americans and Ricans...Can't say i blame them, when he was destryoing all of their fighters...Must of been like a wet dream for them when he fought Whitaker. :yep

When you're the on top you're always gonna have haters, (just look at Pac/PBF) its ineevitable i suppose.

Oscar beat a past it Chavez, that shouldnt even be argued. Out those 97 "cab drivers" There were 16 champions, and numerous top contender...I had no idea that Tijuan cab driver compnany can produce quite a few champions. :hey

how could you say Chavez was a "shell" when he went on to beat some good fighters? I'm not bashing JCC, he was an awesome fighter, but don't tell me he didn't lose to Sweet Pea or that he was a "shell" when he lost to de La Hoya the first time. I'm not saying he didn't beat any good fighters in his first 87 fights, but come on, he didn't start stepping up until his 60th or so fight, so it's not like he was involved in many wars in those fights that made him a battered shell by the time he fought Whitaker and then Oscar

how anyone can say that Chavez was overrated is the most ******ed thing i've ever heard.

you simply DO NOT go having the longest undefeated record in boxing history 89-0, having the most title fights, the most successful title defenses...and be overrated.

whoever thinks that is just stupid.

He literally almost KILLED taylor that night.

Oh yeaa....and whoever said chavez was in his prime at his first loss...

    BULL****

i'd LOVE to see someone go 89-0 and STILL be in their prime...

I don;t care about anyone else's opinion about Chavez, but my opinion is Chavez was an tremendous fighter who had an amazing career and is one of the best living legends in the game.
Sure, I got pissed off plenty when he's beat a US fighter I was pulling for, but there can be no doubt of the amazing boxing skill set that Chavez brought to the ring every time he fought.
Chavez is not over rated like a Joe Calzaghe, but a real ATG boxer who left it all in the ring every time he fought.

That being said, Pernell would win against Chavez 9 out of 10 fights. Chavez knew realized Sweet Pea's greatness and also knew he might not be as lucky in a rematch and wanted no part of it.

Chavez crude, shitty style of boxing was exposed by Whitaker's slick, athletic, and well-educated style of Euroboxing. Chavez was humiliated.
