I will be watching the video a second time. If anyone has a question on Langford or Jeanette, go ahead and ask. The date of the fight is December 1913.

I finally got it to work ... pretty amazing piece for historical footage ... so many questions answered ..

First of all fighters before the black murderer's row actually knew how to jab, slip a punch and duck ... no curved wrists with thumbs pointed at chins ..

I just watched two top fighters go at it .. Jeannette moved with grace and struck out like lightning ... he sported a wicked jab and a good right hand ... very good movement as well ...

Langford was simply unreal. We are talking about a natural super middleweight who stalked and walked down a top of the line big man with no fear what so ever ... Sam looked rock solid .. the best description I can come up with is a longer armed Qwai with an even better chin and exceptional power ... he paces himself obviously expecting a long paced fight but when he explodes it's like the world sees red ... the speed and power are frightening ... there is no way I can see the post Reno Johnson survivng this guy .. no way ... the best Johnson would have to pitch a no hitter as any chin that went to sleep v.s. Choynski is not taking these bombs by Langford ...

    What footage ... amazing..

History changing footage! The 13th round is like my Langford-Klitschko conception:

I'm sitting the grander argument out on the sidelines whilst eating some fish sticks, but I still believe that promoters keeping their fight catalogs under lock and key is really minimizing the cash flows they could be realizing off of it. It's not just a mistake boxing promoters make though, as it's something every major sport could exploit more than it currently does. Film libraries aren't generally bought and sold with the intent of never releasing the content to capitalize on it- yet boxing promoters sit on their libraries as if what they've got is anything different than other genres of entertainment content, seemingly complacent in fighting for the smaller and smaller piece of the sports networks pie that gets allocated towards classic boxing fights. There's a wealth of content there that just needs some polishing (pre and post fight commentaries, bonus features, etc) in order to generate more cash from a completely untapped source. Instead, they're operating under the same business model in place 25 years ago and convincing themselves that ordering take-out chinese like they always have is better than cooking up the wagyu T-bone that's still in the fridge.

It seems to me like it simply takes more work (read: up front investment) to utilize a new distribution channel than the old dogs are willing to sign up for. That I'm referring to releasing something on DVD as a "new" distribution channel for them speaks volumes. But that's how underutilized it is.

Interesting comments from a big Jack Johnson fan who seems to be changing perspective after reading a well researched book by Pollack, and seeing more film.

I have seen Langford vs. Hauge, Flynn, and Lang. The Flynn and Hauge Ko's were far more than your average ten count. In these fights, Langford looks better than Johnson ever did on film, but Langford wasn't fighting the elite level opponents. I needed to see Langford vs. a top 5 man of his time on film to truly understand his abilities. Jeanette certainly qualifies.

Jeanette was only stopped twice in his career due to a huge heart, a solid but " dentable " chin, and amazing recuperation powers. Langford works him over worse than Vitali Klitschko beat on Briggs. In a modern setting, this fight would have been stopped.

At any rate, I am now 100% sold on Langford. He has an iron jaw, will to win, great stamina, long arms, quick hands, tremendous body punching, and left hook that could qualify as a deadly weapon. A Mike Tyson comparison in attack is valid. I concur, Langford would have knocked out Jack Johnson period. Now I understand why those who saw Langford felt he could have taken out Joe Louis.

As for the weight of Langford in this fight, Sam looks to be about 180-185. The date of the fight was December, 1913. Box rec reports his weight two fights before was 185, then says he was out of shape at 199.

This fight with Jeanette was billed as the World Heavyweight title,
as recognized by the French Boxing Federation which had stripped Jack Johnson for his dubious draw with Jim Battling Johnson. A high stakes match for sure. Both Jeanette and Langford were in shape.

Just for accuracy Jack Johnson was stripped prior to the Jim Johnson draw.

    My question too.

I still love Johnson but am amazed by Langford .. his pound for pound strength, speed and power are unrivaled to me .. I am not sold on Johnson's chin and believe that a prime Langford had the greatest shot by far to dent it .. there is a reason why all their common opponents say Sam would have won ...

Mendoza likes to imply Johnson was stripped because of the poor fight, with Battling Jim, but it occured prior to that, as you have stated.
Just to add,Langford was also stripped of the title by the French Federation just after this fight, so what credibilty should we give this organization?

    Johnson was stopped by
    Klondike 1899,[ body punches]
    Choynsky 1901 temple blow]
    Floored by Ketchel 1909[possibly fake]
    Kod by Willard 1917 [26rds] [Johnson was 37 ].
Floored by Bob Lawson 7th rd and retired 8th rd 1926 [Johnson was 47]
Three kos plus. 2 knockdowns in 27 years.

    Langford was stopped by
    Joe Jeanette 1905
    Young Peter Jackson 1906

Floored twice by Jack Johnson 1906[ receiving 2 long counts].
Floored by Jim Barry 1907[w 10]
    Foored by Jim Barry 1907[drew]
Floored by Iron Hague 1909 [some say twice].
Floored twice by Porky Flynn 1913
    Floored by Kid Cotton 1914
    Floored by Harry Wills 1916
Stopped and floored by Fred Fulton 1917
    Floored by Bill Tate1919
Floored 4 times by Harry Wills 1920
    Floored by Jeff Clark 1920
This brings us up to Langford's 37 year.

Thre kos, plus 16 knockdowns, in 15 years.
How do you think Johnson's chin compares with Langford's?

Why don't you ask Matt why Johnson was stripped? I suspect it is because Johnson would not fight top competition as Champion, which Langford most certainly did.

Perhaps Langford was stripped because his next fight after Jeanette lasted only seven seconds! Matt, if you are reading this, please tell us why both men were stripped.

I wonder if you have seen Langford vs., Jeanette yet, or read the comments from pro Jack Johnson fans. Now we know why Johnson avoided Langford as champion. He would have been knocked out, period!

PS: If your question someone's credibility, you should at least know how to spell it.

Dude, Langford had more total matches with big punchers, and greater amount of fights vs quality opposition when the opposition was in their prime. Once he grew into his heavyweight body, Langford was not stopped by punches for a great many years. The Fulton loss was on cuts. After that fight, Langford's vision began to fade.

By the way Johnson was Ko'd SIX times in his career, and don' be so sure about the total knockdowns either, as you are merely going on what an editor bother to update on Box Rec.

Are you trying to suggest that Johnson had the better chin? Bawhahahaha!

McVey, this is half baked and you know it . Little more disappointing to me on this board than when knowledgeable posters like yourself spin arguments that you know are flawed when you write them for the sake of fefending a favorite... for starters, Johnson was iced multiple times, Langford was not. Johnson fought in a safety first, hug and hold style with nominal offense while Langford was an aggressive fighter. Langford fought far more often and against far better competition. Langford post 312 blind in one eye. The defeats to Fulton were based on injury, not being KO'ed .. the losses to Wills are on par with Johnson's loss to Willard, an old man losing to physical giants in their own prime except Wills was light years superior to Willard ...

Again I love Johnson but the facts are he did duct a rematch with Langford at all costs that and McVey, Wills and Jeannette all are on record saying that they believe Langford would have won a rematch post 1910 for sure ...
