Should Catchweights be allowed in a world title fight?

Personally, I don't think so. If your going to be the best at the weight division you have to beat the best, and if they are at their best at the full weight then let them fight at that weight, surely?!

    What you think?

if bogus federations stay in boxing then catchweight fights stay too.

its not right but it's not likely to change.

I agree, I dont think they should be involved in title fights, Ray Leonard had some bizzare ones in his time.

surely if u beat a champ at a catchweight, in theory ur handicapping him, therefore u should only be known for beating a world champ, not claiming a world title.

the pacqiuao/margo fight is for a vacant belt which makes it a bit more fair, but still the same principle in my eyes really

    yeah i get ur point.

isn't the pac margo fight for the wbc belt?

Boxing really needs a governing body now.

it's always needed one governing body. i don't follow belts anymore because it cheapens boxing.

even though everyone knows all these federatons are bogus people keep using 'belts' to build up a fighter's achievements..hell the BBC do it daily.

so as long as people want to credit them in any way they won't be going anywhere. but it's completely detrimental to the sport.

Depends what you mean by "catchweight".

Let's say there's a Featherweight title fight and the two boxers agree to fight at 124, Featherweight is any weight between 123-126. This (contrary to popular belief) is appropriate because they are still fighting within the Featherweight division.

Now if they agree to fight at 129, this is NOT appropriate because now they are fighting in the Super Featherweight division for a Featherweight title.

Now let me bring up Pac/Margarito, they have agreed to come in at 150. This is appropriate, they are fighting for a Light Middleweight title within the Light Middleweight division which is anywhere between 148-154.

So in short: don't get your panties in a bunch people, this fight is legit.:good

They should be abolished completely, or at least in fights that have 8 rounds or more. There should be no place for it in modern boxing and the frequency in which they appear in big fights is nothing short of a disgrace.

A couple of catchweight fights and all of a sudden people that didnt cared about titles start acting like its the most important thing in boxing.

Im not saying its not legit, all im saying is that if it is for a world title then they should fight at any weight that is within the limit.

otherwise we should start making belts for a 150 pound champ or whatever next

I don't care personally. What ever rules make the best fight the best, and allow potential match-ups to happen.
