Margo would just eat those punches and spit it out. There's no way in hell Pac would KO Margarito. I think Margo has a big chance of stopping Manny.
hopefully i will have somehow convinced myself of this come fight night hype is half the reason why i love this sport :yep
How can this fight look a lot like Margo-Cotto? :huh Have you ever seen Pacquiao fight?? Cotto was running and boxing from the ropes and the outer edge of the ring. Pacquiao has never fought like that in his life, and never will. His whole game is based around movement and offence. Pacquiao is going to try and keep the fight in the centre of the ring as much as possible where Margo is not as effective, and he will do this by continually pivoting and refusing to get trapped on the ropes. This fight will not be anything even close to Margo-Cotto, in any way. Really stupid thread.
Explain how Pacquiao, at his size, maintains position in the centre of the ring, against a come forward, hard chinned, longer armed, taller, stronger volume puncher? Roach has already acknowledged Pacquiao needs to box to beat Margarito, so where do you get your analysis from? Cotto, who is naturally bigger than Pacquiao and has more ring smarts in my opinion, could not resist Margarito and keep to ring centre, so i find it very hard to believe Pacquiao will. Just because Pacquiao hasn't fought like that before doesn't mean he wont this time. He has to use the ring as much as he can. I think Pacquiao will occupy ring centre for the first few rounds, while Margarito paces himself, but when Margarito really starts to throw, don't expect Pacquiao to be standing in there trading. If he does he'll get hurt and likely beaten.
Absolutely not. And I can answer your questions with one word: Movement. Pac is not going to stand on flat-feet in centre-ring having a firefight with Margarito. I never said that. Pac is going to keep moving in and out on Margo, whenever Margo tries to bull him to the ropes Pac is not going to do what Cotto did and let himself get pinned down, he is going to use his speed and his footwork to pivot out of trouble and return the fight to centre-ring. With Pac's back on the ropes, Margarito can hurt him. Badly. Pac and Roach will know this, they both possess high ring IQs. For Pac to beat someone as big and strong as Margo, he needs to keep the fight in and around centre-ring, and use his speed to unleash rapid in-out attacks, and then change position, then another in-out attack, and then change position. He cannot plant his feet and go to war, and he cannot get backed up. To be honest, I am very surprised that I'm even having to explain this. It really should be obvious to anyone who has seen Pacquiao and Margarito fight before that this must and will be Pacquiao's strategy.
That's probably the weakest opinion of the day then. Cotto does not have anywhere near the ring smarts of Pacquiao. Miguel Cotto lost his fight with Margarito because of his dire lack of ring smarts. Cotto is a better boxer than Margo and was outboxing him early, but as the rounds went past Cotto was accumulating unnecessary damage and this led to his demise. What happened was that every time Margarito caught him on the ropes, Cotto did not know to hold Margo and thwart the attack. Instead, he simply allowed Margo to more or less stand on his feet and land uppercut after uppercut after uppercut... ...it was truly shocking to me that a well-schooled pro boxer did not know how to stop eating punches on the ropes. Why do you think Bernard Hopkins is still fighting today?? Because he never, ever lets his opponent tee off on him, as soon as he is backed up, he grabs his opponent, turns him around, and then they are separated, and it's a clean way out for him. By contrast, why do you think Miguel Cotto's face has looked like a smashed melon after his losses? Because he doesn't have those smarts. He is naive. Manny Pacquiao has exemplified an excellent tactical brain in some of his fights. He has the discipline and composure to pull off pre-prepared moves even in the heat of battle, and we have never seen him dominated in a fight, he possesses great mental strength.
You really underestimate Manny's strength. He was much stronger than Cotto in their fight. Cotto landed some flush punches and Manny walked right through them. Look at what Manny did to Hatton who is clearly a Jr.welter when in shape. Look at Manny about 10 years ago and Manny today. His weight is not around his gut. He has matured into what we call man strength. He took those KOs early in his career for the same reason Tony took his. Being small and not physically matured. I'd say in prime shape, Tony is 147lbs at his best. He never looked great at 154lbs. Manny on the other hand I think will do just fine at 154. Short, but his body has taken on 150lbs just naturally.
Okay well firstly, in reply to your intial repsonse, not this one quoted, you said Pacquiao would try to keep the fight in ring centre as much as possible. I said Pacquiao would not be able to due to size and styles. You then say Pacquiao will beat Margarito using movement. But since when has Pacquiao boxed whilst on the back foot? Against DLH, he moved, then closed in using speed and DLH's inability to move. Against Hatton, Cotto, and Clottey, when Pacquiao was forced back, he looked inept at times, he showed poor head movement and a willingness to stand, trade and take punches that infuriated Roach. Pacquiao is a great offensive boxer. His stamina, volume and newly found punch picking is testament to that. But going backwards, he can be troubled. Pacquiao can move but he almost always sets himself before punching. That means being idle and planting your feet for a moment, something that Margarito can take advantage of. As for this post; Cotto and Pacquiao are not as far apart ring IQ wise as you make out. Pacquiao has, as already mentioned, been busted up to a degree by Clottey (which is bad considering Clottey's punch output alone) and Cotto. As for tying up and thwarting attacks. Come on man, when has Pacquiao ever shown defensive nous like this? V Clottey = absorbed uppercuts unnecesarily on rare backfoot occasions V Cotto = absorbed anything when pushed back in early rounds V Hatton = winged punches like crazy when pushed back V Marquez = looked totally disorganised when on back foot Dont get me wrong, Roach has brought him along very well as he has moved up the weights. But Pacquiao is no ring genius. He likes to fight, and right now he is very confident. He has ignored Roach and traded before.
I couldn't agree more. Ring smarts lost Cotto that fight with Margo. He fought a dumb fight refusing to clinch Margo to break up his rhythm and retreating to the ropes and abandoning his jab and body attack. Cotto isn't a thinking man's fighter he went to war with Pac as well instead of using his jab and outboxing him like he did in the first round.
