iv seen alot of pac fans defending these catch weights saying it dosnt give the opponent a disadvantage but of course it does also if you fighting for a title at a weight it should be at that weight but if the extra pounds wernt a disadvantage why would catchweights be insisted upon another example is the countdown to pacquiao morales 3 when in the contract they had for every pound morales was over he had to give them half a million dollars and roach says "if hes 2 pounds over we will fight him if hes 3 pounds over we will take the money and wont fight him cause it will be too much of an advantage to him" so with roach admitting here that the few pounds would make a difference how come the fans cant see it?
Obviously Pac's catchweight fights are an attempt to limit his opponents' rehydration weight on fightnight, since they are naturally much bigger men than him. It's an attempt to level the playing field a bit, even though Pac will still be at a considerable size disadvantage anyway, even in catchweight fights. I don't see the problem with catchweight fights at all myself. As soon as they introduced "super" and "junior" divisions, it completely legitimized catchweights in my eyes, because these arbitrary new weights have no meaning to me. Is 150 all that different from 154? Not to me. I recognize only the traditional 8 weight classes, and the rest are a lot of shite really, ways for organizations to make more money.
well i know sine i spend alot of time struggling with weight in boxing 4 pounds can make a big difference
I don't have a problem with them as long as their not for titles. If so then it's a ****ing farce and should be discredited immediately. You can't win a vacant strap at 154 for a fight being fought at 150.
Not to Margarito it won't. 150 is a GREAT weight for him. The guy has spent his career being a big welterweight, and yet in his lightmiddle fight with Daniel Santos, I thought he looked like the naturally smaller man, a smaller frame. 150 is a perfect weight for Antonio Margarito.
Agreed! Great fight and great event though. If that fight hadn't got made because Pea wouldn't go to 140 and JCC wouldn't go to 147, it would have been a tragedy for boxing.
understanding this could work well for margarito im not just on about this fight im on about past and future fights i mean it really is stupid also the fact that this fight is at a catchweight annoys me because ryan rhodes was supposed to get this fight but missed out on it because pac wanted another belt and if pac wins i guarantee he wont get any shot
I think we have to judge catch-weights on a fight by fight base. Some times they are needed to level the playing field and other times they are a joke. The upcoming Pac-Margo catch-weight fight may actually favor Margo. Margo has been at his best at 147 but the lay of since last fighting at 147 against Mosley and his advancing age may have made it difficult for him to make the WW limit again so only having to make 150-151 or what ever it is should help him. However, like you pointed out Ant, having fights at catch-weights for a belt of another weight is a farce and a disgrace.
but still if you need the playing feild levelled then dont fight for a title if people just want to see the 2 fighters meet because people who arnt true fans will look at how many titles pac has had in different weight classes and instantly judge him on that not the great fights hes had
Like I said before, it's hard to understand why when two fighters who are actually strapping on the gloves and a boxing organization agree on a weight, it's the couch potato boxing fan, who's only fighting will involve who gets the last beer or chip, throws a fit.
