Styles makes fights. It is a popular theory that I think holds true as long as all things are even or near even. A puncher or pressure fighter is not going to bet a boxer unless he is clearly the more tallanted/skilled boxer in the ring.
The best puncher/pressure fighter type in boxing today is Manny Pacquiao. He is not clearly better than Mayweather. If both boxers come in at 100%. Mayweather wins every time.
The way to beat Mayweather is to out box him. Oscar De La Hoya was able to do this in spurts during their fight. Granted De La Hoya is 5′ 10½″ with a reach of 73″. Compared to Mayweather 5′ 8″ and 72". So he had some room to work with. That is the best example I can think of for anyone being able to outbox Mayweather.
As far as out counter punching him this is easier said than done.
I can't think of any real life examples.
There is a reason why Mayweather has not lost in 41 pro fights and had really only one Castillo and maybe two De La Hoya close fights. He is very good at boxing.
