Another thread made me think of doing this one, I feel it needs to be done. The man simply did not get the love he deserved. Chris Byrd is a great fighter, person and asset to boxing.

Chris had the heart of a warrior. In an age of guys not wanting to fight other guys, you have to respect a man who gave up 3-6 inches in most of his fights, 25-40 lbs, and inches of reach. There have been other short heavies, Tyson, Tua, Haye is a small heavy as well, but what do all of those have in common? They all had the power to hurt big men, something Byrd did not. Yet he would take last minute fights against the tallest, most dominant fighters in recent HW history.

You have to like him as a person as well. He's articulate and well spoken, he doesn't disrespect other fighters and its pleasant to watch interviews with him. You can tell by how close he is with his family (his corner was all family), where his values lie. Someone like that is a good ambassador for the sport.

I felt that he deserved his own thread, one where we can discuss his better days, and remember the career of a good fighter, and a good guy.

Undersized, underpowered, fighting guys like Tua, Ike, Vitali, Wlad? Takes beatings and keeps in there, good skills, well spoken? Chris Byrd is a fav of mine and while it was a bit heartbreaking how his career ended, hope he is living well right now and enjoying life.

    Nothing but respect for Byrd.

Not terribly recent, but he's well past his prime here.

Oh and, he fought Holy and Golota as well.

Well, this is a better comment than your first. Chris Byrd was never meant to be a great HW though, but he did a hell of a good job with what he had to work with. Point of this thread wasn't to declare him an ATG, but appreciate him for what he was. His body movement is a thing of beauty IMO.

Byrd was a godly champion, who wasn't afraid to take on giants, just like David. He slayed one of them.
