Well, by necessity, it would not be that Jones.

 

False but he had the ability to beat any 175lber.

 

The problem I have with Jones in fantasy match ups is his fragile Glass Jaw which would be exploited by other legit ATG's he would be fighting. Anyone can look good against Glen Kelly, Rick Frazier, Otis Grant, Clinton Woods, etc.

 

Jeez, do you honestly believe that? The Kessler that lost to Ward would've beat that Jones?

That sounds about right, although I think that even prime Jones struggles with Charles and Moore.

 

And how many people were actually able to capitalize on it before he slowed down? Even assuming his jaw just didn't get worse with age (which undisputably happens), a puncher still doesn't have much of a chance if he can't catch the guy.

 

I would place Jones's prime from Toney(1994) to Harmon(2001)

Griffin didnt have the fastest hands, but he was able to land a lot of counter lefts on Jones chin. So if he could I can also see quite a few other guys being able to as well

I cant agree with this, he rarely got hit, so why would his jaw get worse with age?

If Jackson was able to land on McCallum and Graham, he would beable to land on Jones.

 

It has to do with the amount of fluid in your cochlea. 90% of "chin" is actually just a matter of balance which is controlled by the inner ear. As anyone gets older, they have less fluid in their inner ear and their balance gets worse.

This is different than the reason behind when someone gets knocked out cold though. That's concussive force. A concussion is worse, and it becomes easier to get concussions after you've had them before. All boxers suffer hundreds of concussions over the course of their career, just most of them are small ones. It's part of the job description. Even if he didn't get hit during fights much, just as much (if not more) damage is done through sparring.

So there's two reasons why his chin might have gotten worse even though he wasn't hit much.

Could guys have caught him? Sure, but just because someone gets caught, it doesn't automatically mean he'll go down, even if his chin is bad. I'd still favor him to beat any of his contemporaries (including Jackson and Michalczewski) 8 times out of 10. He was just that much better than them.

Start getting into the historical guys, and you come across more guys who had both the power and the skill and the quickness. Those guys he'd have more problems against. I still suspect he'd outbox Moore or Charles or Spinks as often as not, but they'd have a pretty decent chance of knocking him out.

 

The Kessler that lost to Ward, suffering with double vision and rusty would have lost to Jones, but not, the fit undefeated version of Kessler, against a clean Jones

Ottke would have beaten Jones with great movement. Ottke beat Tarver as an amateur and Tarver had Jones number. I know amateur dosent mean everything, but gives a guideline, and if Ottke was losing to Jones he would up his game and blast Jones out like he did Mundine when losing
