You guys are probably right. But here's where I'm coming from. The uppercut is the punch that Foreman would most likely hurt Jack with. He'd catch him coming in. Likewise, the uppercut is the same punch Willard planned on catching Jack with. He said he planned on hitting him with the same uppercut that killed a previous opponent. Like Foreman, he planned to catch the smaller opponent on the way in. Knowing Dempsey, he would circle Foreman, waiting for him to miss a punch (maybe a wild hook or jab) and then Jack would dive in with his infamous Dempsey roll. You guys could be right, though. Good opinions in here. I'm just saying that Jack was a bit wiser than the other swarmers and planned his attacks better against big men with thunderous uppercuts.
I'd go with George. If they fought five times, I wouldn't be suprised if Jack won twice, wouldn't be shocked if he won three times. But I'd go with George to win the series. Problem is, George could cut a ring pretty darn well. I just don't see Jack circling around George picking his moment. I will say, though, that Jack was less square, and had more weave along with his bob, than Frazier, and would have been harder to nail with an upper cut.
Jack Dempsey threads periodically come up from time to time, and when they do, they usually appear in bunches. In fact, its right around the holidays that they typically appear...
Would Dempsey be able to satand over his opponent and hit him as soon as he stood up. Imagine if there was no neutral corner and foreman was able to stand over his opponent after a knockdown
If Bob Foster can beat Dempsey, then Foreman KO1 hardly covers it. Dempseys poor critics have used up all the hyperbole, when matching him against fighters who were not elite heavyweights in their own era. Personaly I think that this is the first oponent we have matched Dempsey against in recent days who has a decent chance of beating him. My money is on Dempsey though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Foreman annihilates him. Probably in a round, maybe it takes two. Willard still hit Jack, even getting pounded. In fact, after the first round, Jacks dominance petered out and Jess was very much competitive. Firpo caught him early and damn near ended his reign. George catches him early too, and keeps doing it until he levels him.
I like Dempsey. I think Foreman versus swarmers is a reputation he enjoys for good reason (Frazier, Cus), but one that's overstated. Against a reasonably stationary puncher he looked vulnerable, if awesome, so i've got to imagine that a dipping and concise-punching Dempsey, very capable of picking his spots and with outstanding footwork, would cause him fits.
Dempssey's legs though. His legs!!!!!!! So supple were his delicate dancer's legs, letting him pounce like a tiger. ROAR!
I think Jack has a chance. He may lose, but if he caught Foreman square on the chin with a left hook, George may be in serious trouble. Frazier caught George flush with a left hook during the first round, and it stunned him. George immediately shoved Frazier away. Dempsey arguably had a faster and harder left hook than Frazier. If Frazier could catch Foreman with a left hook, so could Dempsey, and the results may be worse. Jack certainly has puncher's chance with his speed and power.
If it's the Willard strategy Dempsey bobbing in and out shuffling for openings he's got a much better chance. if it's the stand and bang firpo Dempsey he's gonna get his **** handed to him as far as i can see.
