    Straight question

no sectarianism please. its hard to work out what to call a boxer that fights for ireland at the olympics but is born in northern ireland.

is northern ireland as a political entity considered purely prodestant (ie the idea that if you are in any part of ireland it is irish as a nationality) or can a catholic boxer born in northern ireland be considered northern irish.

Most of the Catholics in N Ireland are genetically Irish (their families and ancestors have been living in Ireland since long before England was a country...probably as long as 8000 years ago). N Ireland was planted with lowland Scottish and english settlers around 1607 and N Ireland only came into existence as a political entity in 1921.

People from N Ireland are entitled to dual nationality and can choose to have Irish or UK passports or both. Most Catholics in N Ireland consider themselves to be Irish...and will fight for Ireland if possible...while many Protestants consider themselves to be british.

So I would consider any fighter from N Ireland that fights for Ireland Irish.

People from Northern Ireland are Irish if they wish to be considered Irish. Just because your Catholic doesnt necessarily mean your Irish, though you'd be hard pressed to find a Catholic who didnt consider themselves Irish.

Northern Irish fighters, regardless of religion fight for Ireland bar the commonwealth games. They are part of the Irish team same as in rugby. Its ruled by one body for the island. Some of our best fighters are protestant but im sure they dont mind fighting for Ireland.

i apreciate that. please forgive the short hand in what is obviously an issue that has a degree of semantic importance.

No worries mate, it can get confusing. Paul McCloskey for example is Irish yet was British Champion, same with Martin Lindsay.

If you're talking about personal perception it depends entirely on the individual. I have Catholics and Protestants in my family and mostly they call themselves Irish, even those who lean towards the loyalist view (moderately I should point out, there's no nutters nailing people up on fences). If you're a Northern Irish protestant then you're almost certainly an Ulster Scot and Scot's and Irish are the same race anyway.
I call myself Irish and I was born in England. I don't understand the notion of what you are being dictated by where you're born. If I'd been born somewhere in Africa I wouldn't be an African I'd be a white European who was born in Africa.

If this question relates to your world champions thread I think it's safe to list all boxers from the 6 counties as Northern Irish regardless of whether they are Catholic, Protestant or whatever else.
