Would Mayweather Be Greater Had He Fought Cotto Or Pacquiao...and Lost?

I think that he would be, given that it was a competitive fight. Yeah its great to have an undefeated record and all, but its not so great to lack a career defining fight on your record. That is what Roy Jones and Calzaghe have been most criticized for, and will continue to be in the history books. Leonard had Hearns, Duran had Leonard, Ali had Frazier and Foreman, and so on. Mayweather has beaten a lot of good fighters, some great (at less than great times in their careers). He deserves credit for his accomplishments. But, the way I see it, just getting in the ring with another superstar who the boxing world believes actually has a solid chance at beating you, is an accomplishment in itself. Maybe the most honorable one.

All fighters that face the best lose. It does not harm legacy it only increases it.

If Floyd lost to Cotto, he would not be great, because Cotto is just a mediocre fighter who got chased around the ring by Ndou and Clottey.

Being a four-time world champion in three weight classes, winning 15 or 16 world title fights and defeating more than ten other world champions makes him...what, like, the most successful mediocre fighter of all time?

Yeah but that mediocre fighter has a far better resume at welter. Now what do you say to that? I already guess you are biased as can be with that post.

if pbf will not fight the best, his legacy will always be criticized for the years to come.

He won 3 vacated titles. The one champ he did beat was a one legged Yuri Foreman.

    Judah
    Clottey(Gift)

    Mayweather

    Judah
    Baldomir
    Hatton
    Mosley

Yeah im pretty sure Mayweather has the better resume. But Cotto has bled far more at the weight then Mayweather if that means anything.

I kind of agree that most great fighters have lost, not because they arent great, but because if you consistently fight the best available you will eventually lose. Thats why Cotto has lost. Thats why Pacquiao has lost. Shane, Oscar, those guys always challenged themselves.

If you add Hatton to FMJ's welter resume, why not add Marquez.

Cotto beat Shane and stopped Judah. Hatton was a JWW who was stopped in 2 by Pac and Baldomir just ain't a ****ing talking point.
