He specifically pointed out Pac's unimpressive sparring in Ep 1 of 24/7. I watched Cotto/Margarito again the other day. A lot of times when I re-watch a fight I haven't seen for awhile I come away with some new opinions of what happened. Looking back I do not think Tony was ever in danger of losing that fight. Even when he was losing rounds he was doing what he wanted and needed to do. Grinding Cotto down and beating him up. If that version of Margo shows up, Pac is in a world of ****.
Max Kellerman pointed it out early.....something to the effect of Cotto winning the rounds, but clearly Margarito investing and laying the groundwork for what may come later. Though Margarito lost most of those early rounds, he very much looked in his element doing what he needed to do.
Margarito WILL get major props if he wins. However, you are still right. If he wins we will hear these two arguments from the Pac devoted... 1- One weight category too far... Pacquiao finally found the ceiling; he should never have fought above Welter. 2- Manny is juggling too many things at once... Pacquiao would have destroyed Margarito, but Pacquiao had too many things on his mind. Pacquiao lost to Pacquiao; he is trying to be too many things at once. Even if Manny came in looking better than he ever has, if he loses we will hear these two arguments over and over again. Hey, maybe both of these arguments are valid; could be. Truth be told there is always a reason for a loss, that doesn't change the fact that you lost. Fans get too caught up in excuses... That being said, I don't think Pac is going to lose. However, if he does I guarantee we will here these arguments...
OH cotto the greatest welterweight of all time that got dropped many times at 140 and was running from turtle shell 1-2 punch per minute Clottey.Cotto is overrated. I cant believe SHANE lost to him. That got me thinking wtf happened to Shane mosely? is it age, the jitters or what? I dunno i just can't work it out.
I also recently re-watched that fight. It really is a classic. I still think that Cotto could have won it if he had been a little less brave at the end; he had quite a few rounds in the bank (at least on my card)... I had him taking 1-6 (I don't know how Merchant could give Margarito any of the first 5), 8 and 9 were pretty close, but I also think Cotto won them. If Cotto had clinched and ran for the 10th round I think he would have had enough time to recover and make it through the 11th and 12th, loosing the rounds but not getting dropped. Of course that isn't really a very Cotto thing to do; so maybe you are right and Margarito WAS always going to win... That being said... Margarito's chin is amazing in that match; the punches he walks through are just brutal. He never even looked hurt... You can cast doubt on the gloves in that match; but no one can argue the integrity of his chin.
Can wait for this fight on paper this should be a classic. I think Margo will do a number on pac. I think the size difference and Margos situation along with Manny distractions with politics makes it even more interesting.
