The WBO 23rd annual convention is winding up now, and some odd things were discussed. The WBO had Pavlik ranked at #4 at 168. Now they have him ranked #3 at 160. It looks like they plan to order a title eliminator between Pavlik and WBO #1 contender Gennady Martyrosian.

I do not know if this guy is related to Vanes or not, and I do not think I've seen him fight. Just judging by his record he looks like a guy Kelly Pavlik would probably demolish, but like I said, I haven't seen him fight.

This development just seems weird to me. Would Pavlik even be willing to take the mandatory route at this point? Is Pirog a big enough name to even get Pavlik's attention?

I suppose a lot would depend on HBO's interest in a Pavlik/Pirog fight, and how much they would pay. And, obviously, a lot depends on weight issues. Anyway, it seemed like a thread worthy news item, if only for the shear weirdness of it.

Edit: Guys are coming out of the woodwork hollering Pavlik's name. It now appears that David Lemieuxs promoter plans to ask the WBC to order and Pavlik/Lemieux elimonator.

I'd like to see pirog/pavlik and it might be marketable due to the exposure the p man got in blowing out the golden child. I think pirog could outbox kelly if he was focused enogh to avoid a brawl

Gennady Martirosyan is a #1 contender? :blood

    That is a weird development.

It's been just over a year since he was owned by N'Dam N'Jikam, in which time he's beaten three guys with a combined record of 71-68-7. That's what gets you to the top by the WBO's standards?

Is he better than Lockett? Politics made Lockett #1.

Martirosyan isn't a bad fighter, but he would get brutalized by Pavlik.

If what you say is true, this is a good look. This is about as close to a perfect risk-reward ratio as Kelly could find. A tailor-made opponent in an eliminator? Boing!

Somewhere in between Lockett and Rubio.

If the HBO commentary team's feelings are any indication of the HBO Sports executives' feelings, then Pirog is an attractive enough investment to pay big money for a Pavlik fight.

I could see it headlining its own PPV in late 2011, with both guys appearing once or twice more on regular HBO first.

HBO said they want Pirog back. Fernando Guerrero is the WBO #2 and has a bit of a name. Pirog/Guerrero with Pavlik/Martyrosian as the co-feature might work.

In addition, diBella was in no hurry to put Martinez in tough. He wanted Shane Mosely or Angulo. They only took Williams because HBO forced them into it. Pavlik is not the WBC mandatory, and he turned down the rematch. Sergio has every right to tell Pavlik to go **** himself, and he could get away with that for awhile.

If Williams wins, we'd have Arum and Goosen negotiating. That's a lot like putting two tom cats in a gunny sack, and expecting them to make peace.

Pavlik probably would not be able to get an immediate fight with either man regardless of the outcome of Williams/Martinez.

The Pirog route might not be a bad idea. Especially when you factor in the reality that Pirog cannot fight off the back foot:nono

i read this too. from what kelly and his camp have been saying, i do not see them going for this. if...and that is a big if...but if they can get to 160 and do it effectively, they don't sound like this is what they would do it for. pirog, sturm, williams/martinez winner, etc. but not an eliminator. i could be wrong but i feel the WBO is pissing in the wind.

kelly has consistantly said he'll only wants big fights and will only go back to 160 for big fights.

I doubt Prize Fight is in a hurry to get Guerrero in there with Pirog. Frankly, Guerrero's not ready to make it competitive quite yet, and while he doesn't need to win, he needs to at least make it competitive.

I can't speak as to whether Pirog can fight off the back foot, but against a straight puncher like Pavlik, he wouldn't have to as long as he brings his upper body movement.

You're probably right, and as far as a Pavlik/Pirog fight, Pirog already said he would take the fight, HBO already said they want Pirog back, and Pavlik said he wants some kind of title shot next time out, so there is really no need for an eliminator.

I'm not sure I would put Pirog in with Pavlik yet.

Is Pirog fighting again this year? He has been a bit inactive, even for a top fighter.

...except that it's unfair to other people who do have to suffer the bureaucratic process and fight in eliminators.

Martirosyan isn't a "big fight" by any means but it's a chance for Pavlik to look spectacular, build his confidence with a very probable KO win and reconnect with the HBO audience on a positive note.

He beat Jacobs in July followed by 2 or 3 weeks of hype, and then silence. He looks like a pretty damn good boxer, but he's already 30 years old. He ought to stay busy, but there is nothing in the works that I know of.
