boxing fans that think punching power is everything

    are they the biggest newbs of the boxing fan section? hasn't it been determined time and time again that world class boxing skills triumphs (few exceptions of course, jackson-graham for example) over power almost any day of the week?? so why are people still clinging to the notion that possessing a knockout punch will equal instance success?

    Most people think that bc they have never boxed a day in their life and they think buying a punching bag and gloves make them a boxer!! Power can be zapped and the what. Skills pay the bills!

    the combination of the two makes for the best fighter, fact

    who said skills and power are mutually exclusive? The best/top 50 p4p are typically at least somewhat heavy handed

    Yeah no specific attribute will get you anywhere on its own. Its when you're able to string them together, skills are pretty useless for instance if you don't have speed, power, the heart for the sport or anything else to go with them.

    i definetly agree with you power aint everything.

    yes it can bail you out.

    yes it is somewhat important.

    but it aint everything and it dont guarantee ****.

    paulie malignaggi is still a top contender.

    and btw a weak chin dont guarantee a loss.

    khan and wlad proves that.


    if power was everything
    divisions would look like this.

    the light welterweight division would have maidana urango alexander and cambpell in the top 4 and none of them would fall below number 4 in rankings.

    supermiddle would look like this.
    allen green would had been outright winning the super six. with abraham and froch in 2nd and third

    and in heavyweight david tua would already be number one and he would not move from the number one spot untill he hits 45 years old.

    if adamek stayed at light heavy he would had been above chad dawson and he would rule that division.

    alfred angulo would be number 1 at junior middle with cotto and margarito at 2nd and 3rd.

    There are different types of skills for different types of fighters. People who are slower, but powerful generally have to stalk their opponent to break them down and slow them down. A speedy fighter will generally rely on defense so they don't get stuck in a firefight.

    Skills and strategy are tools fighters use to break down their opponent, but skill alone will not win you the fight. Ex: Pac vs Barrera, Hatton vs KT. The latter were expected to win, but they didn't. Fighters have to actually fight each other to show that their skills are actually effective against live opponents.

    Hmm Campbell is a banger at 140? He wasnt even one at 135. Maybe Ortiz belongs there before him.

    Green!?!?!? This guys power is so overrated. I have never gotten why he has all the hype he has. Abraham is definately the hardest hitting SMW.
    Actually maybe even p4p.

    i agree with just about everything said, but what im referring to mostly are the fans that make a quick trip to boxrec and look at someone's KO percentage *cough* "rico" *cough*. the one's that say, "oh yea, so and so has only knocked out 10 opponents in his twenty wins, he's feather fisted". THATS what im talking about, anyone who truly knows or follows the sport would know that a high KO percentage doesn't always equal a big puncher. it could do with alot of things: fights being stopped on a cut(s), accumulative damage leading to a corner stoppage, fighting a bunch of bums with weak chins, or just retirement fro pure exhaustion. people who dont know boxing will auomatically assume that vitali klitschko is the hardest puncher that ever lived simply going by his KO percentage. but anyone who TRULY watches the sport knows that vitali is not the puncher his KO percentage makes him out to be.

    exactly devon, power is definitaly something that can carry a fighter far. but solely relying it will end up being the death of them, like you said its a good thing to have when you're losing a fight and need a turnaround KO to win. david tua is a testament to that when he fought the likes of oleg maskaev and oquendo.
