i already posted my opinion on this issue in a different thread but i think this deserves a thread of its own because the ranking system has to stop atm. I see too many fans who are on the defensive whenever fedor's #1 status is questioned... But as a huge fan of the guy , i think it's a legit question. Fedor can't stay #1 forever , and too many fans have a hard time accepting this fact. I think we can all agree on one thing. In terms of career , longevity , achievements , talent... Fedor is the GOAT of the sport. (or at least , he'll be remembered as one of the GOATS). No one is questioning his entire career... But it's legit to question his current ranking...in 2010. (and in 2011). However , it's also hard to determine who's the current , undisputed # 1 for several months we had hordes of Lesnar fans basically ranking this guy above Karelin & Fedor (in both wrestling & mma....Which is ****ing insane imo) We're talking about a guy who only holds a 5-2 record. Who got beat in his first fight , then inexplicably had an instant title shot right after beating a washed up Heath Herring. (then he only had to fight Randy). the thing is , before randy regained his belt...he only had to fight Sylvia..keep in mind that prior to his fight against Tim , he was retired too...but as soon as he decided to come out of retirement , Dana gave him a free ticket for a title shot...talk about a short-cut! , keep in mind , Couture used to be Sylvia's sparring partner too...So he pretty much knew all of Tim's weaknesses anyway. UFC's HW belt is like a $10 dollar *****...Maybe it's a bad analogy but for the record ,many had a go at it....and no one was ever capable to keep that belt & defend it for long. But , here , judge for yourself: Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UFC_champions#Heavyweight_Championship Which brings us to Cain Velasquez. How long will he be able to keep it ? will he even be able to defend that belt 2 , 3 , 5 times in a row ?...will he be able to even defend it once ? Velasquez is an endurant , very active fighter...his workrate is pretty good & he usually wears his opponents down... He's not a ko artist , his submission offense seems nonexistent..and no one knows how he'd fare against a solid jiujitsu artist...(the best one he fought so far was a zombified Nogueira , a guy who took way too many hits... Ever since Nog almost got koed by Heath herring , i knew his career would never be the same...) Kongo , knocked Cain down on several occasions...(he's lucky that his opponent was clueless on the ground). So far , i'd say that Cain's most impressive victory wasn't against Lesnar but against Ben Rothwell...Rothwell is like a poor man's Barnett (only without barnett's solid sub offense & defense).. Here's Cain vs Rothwell Link http://www.mma-core.com/videos/_Ben_Rothwell_vs_Cain_Velasquez_UFC_104?vid=10007413 Overeem...can we rank this guy above Fedor ? ....Yes and No.... He did beat Brett Rogers but so did Fedor... But Fedor got caught & lost against Werdum... Thing is , Overeem also lost against Werdum... The problem is that Werdum was supposed to have a rematch against Overeem but it never happened. (werdum wanted to have a rematch with fedor , and Overeem seems to be more concerned with K1 than his strikeforce belt) So the situation is very interesting... On one side , we have Cain....(and a potential title fight against Junior Dos Santos or Frank Mir) On the other...we have a potential werdum vs fedor rematch...or against Antonio Silva (who was defeated by werdum , but who happens to be a big & dangerous opponent)... + Barnett , Kharitonov will eventually also fight in strikeforce in 2011.... I guess it's only once Overeem will be done with his K1 grand prix that we'll be able to have a better picture of the current HW division. Note: Junior Dos Santos koed Werdum...So if he beats Cain , he could be a future # 1 HW. (until he gets beat by someone else) so far i'd say that the current # 1 hw spot is vacant... Let's first see what happens in fedor's (or overeem's or cain's) next fight...and depending on the opponent , we'll have a better idea of the current hw ranking.
That was precisely my point in some other thread really, i think you're absolutely right, but of course when you say stuff like that you'll get the Fedor hyperfanclub jumping on you. as of now, Fedor, Overeem, Velasquez and Werdum could all, arguably, be considered #1. We'll need to see them fight before we get a clear idea, and as much as people like to hate the UFC at least they don't have any problem putting the 2 best HW of their organisation in a fight against each other, can't say that much about SF at the moment. Fedor vs Overeem would clearly tell us the real HW SF Champ (cause I don't believe Werdum could win a rematch against any of those 2) and Velasquez VS JDS will tell us who's the Real UFC HW Champ, then the rankings won't be so difficult to make.
I find it funny a little that Werdum needs to beat Overeem and Fedor to prove he is better than them.....
You raise good points i also agree i think it is coming close to the time fedor should perhaps think about hanging up the gloves - he really dosnt have anything else to prove - im not saying he dosnt have 2-3 years left but i would hate to see his legacy get tarnished by losing to opponents that he would of demolished in his prime - as i feel has happened lately with Cro Cop. As for who is #1 HW right now -this may sound stupid- but i really dont think there is one - there is no one yet that has commanded that title (other than fedor) no one HW has stood out recently as being consistent and overall dominating the division - given time we might see JDS, CV, Overeem or Werdum take the spot but until there is a consistent dominating Hw its really to difficult to give a #1 right now.
Who has Cain beaten who could be said was at his peak, who was a well rounded and considered a good MMA fighter? Zombie Nog is no longer a worthy opponent and current Brock (when you ignore the hype) is not a worthy opponent. So in all honesty Cain hasnt beaten any top 10 fighters. Same with Brock, same with Overeem etc. The current worthy fighters at the moment of Overeem, Fedor, Werdum, JDS, Cain, and Josh have not fought each other. Only Josh and Fedor have fought, this should therefor make Werdum number 1.
Id still rank Fedor as the best heavyweight currently active, he's showing signs of decline but is still winning, Werdum fight aside obviously. Dude just made a mistake. Morono is correct about Cain (bet you'd never thought Id say that fella) but we all gotta remember with Cain that if we distinguish the potential from the hype, he could be number one in the future. Beating JDS would help. establish is rep but wouldn't make him automatic number 1 in my opinion. Too many fights in Strikeforce have got to happen to really see where Fedor is at. Same goes for Overeem too
I'm glad there's finally a non biased MMA HW thread that makes some sense. :good if Strikeforce gets their **** together and manage to make the big fights happen, we'll know who's the best.
Well of those guys, the only ones to fight each other are Fedor and Werdum and JDS and Werdum. So by that logic shouldn't JDS be #1? Also Brock and Nog are not top 10? I would love to see what your HW top 10 looks like. Can you post it?
I'm really tired of people slagging the heavyweight division off. What do you want him to do? How's he meant to fight a guy who isn't even in the same ****ing promotion. People want to rail against Lesnar and say "hurr durr he has a 5-2 record" despite the fact that even an old Couture is an alive opponent, he just doesn't have a great chin. Two wins over Mir is impressive too, and so is Carwin. The guy just can't catch a break, and now everybody's saying Cain's fought no-one. People will probably say the same ****ing thing about Dos Santos, it just sickens me. There's a difference between a live opponent and a dangerous opponent, to some degree. Stop disregarding the achievements of the champion just because he found a way to exploit a faulted Lesnar. Saying Lesnar isn't a top 10 heavyweight is ****ing ******ed. And you people need to stop groping the balls of Overeem. You want to talk about a guy who hasn't beat anyone, there's your ****ing overlord of it right there. Every big challenge he's had he's lost, and people say "oh he's just getting into his prime". **** you, alright, let's see how you act when he's sprawled across the floor when he eventually fights someone. It's so boring. Nobody's got any talent in the heavyweight division apparently, even Fedor is getting railed on from getting caught in a ****ing triangle. And you people act like he got exposed. He rushed into FINISHING Werdum and got caught, it happened to Brock, it happened to GSP. Stop being wankers.
The problem right now is that there is no longer a "legitimate" #1. For me Fedor is still #1, but I'm not dumb enough to discard everyone else. That why from my point of view there is alot of people in the top 5 at the 2 position... Honestly I'm holding my top 10 HW for the next year and a half, it usuless to score a HW category that need fight to happen to be able to score it. The only thing I'm gonna add is this. I think HW division in the UFC is ****in screwed. I honestly don't think Brock can gain the title back and it's gonna be 2003 to 2006 all over again. I think the title is gonna switch between Cain, JDS and Shane(if he can get is gaz tank up to date) for the upcoming years. In SF I don't know. While I agree AO hasn't been tested enough at HW in a MMA fight, he really hasn't done that bad in K-1 against brutal oponent. Fedor is still Fedor and I take in 9 time out of 10 against Werdum but against the new Ubereem it's another story....I honestly don't know about that one !
My heavyweight rankings have moved a bit since I last thought about it. 1. Cain 2. JDS 3. Werdum 4. Fedor 5. Lesnar 6. Carwin 7. Mir 8. Big Nog 9. Overeem 10. BigFoot That's my order after briefly thinking on it. I may change it slightly with further thought, but that's about right. If Cain defeats Dos Santos, and no one else fights, it will look about the same. If Dos Santos wins against Cain, and no one else fights, Cain will drop to 4th and 2-4 will advance a spot. Overeem could jump several spots with a quality win. He doesn't have the resume to be any higher at the moment. Nogueira is on his way off this list. He is 2-2 in his last 4 fights; but he has 2 good wins and both guys he lost to are above him on this list.
