I didn't live then, but from watching the old 50s fights, I often find myself humming along to the Cavalcade of Sport theme tune, and singing along to the Pabst Blue Ribbon adverts.

Mentioned what "ol' school" means for me, GP. What UK pubs, gyms 'n fight clubs tug the heart of a Brit?

 

Dick McTaggart was big over in Scotland, I suppose in Scotland he would be the biggest 'old school' memory. I can talk to almost anyone over the age of 65 and ask them about Dick McTaggart and can hold a very good conversation with them.

My Mum's auntie must be near 70, and she started telling me all about Dick McTaggart and how brilliant a boxer he was. I was very surprised.

That is probably the only real common old school memory Scotland has.

The Thomas A Beckett has just closed I believe. It was a pub with a gym above it that I think Henry Cooper boxed out of and Terry Lawless's stable. A lot of history in it.

On the Brit forum a poster Gaz S has recently re-opened Jim Driscoll's old gym in a pub in Wales.

 

Ever gone to any of those places?

 

Nah, went to the Scottish Boxing Hall of Fame the other week, that is about it.

I'm planning a trip down to London early next year, to train, so I'll definitely try to visit it then.

 

What 'n who do ol schoolers in Scotland revere?

 

This has the potential to be a fun thread, because everyone's definition of "old school" is just a little different, based on their age and experience.

For me, being an 80's kid, old school means looking through the old TV guide magazine and honing in on the weekend afternoon lineup of ABC, CBS, and NBC to see which one was airing a fight. Most weekends (except in football season where they were a bit more scarce, though still available) two or all three networks would be airing at least one.

They were good quality fights too; in one January 1985 weekend I sat down to watch Hector Camacho take on Louie Burke on CBS, then later that day saw Harry Arroyo come from behind to dramatically stop Terrence Alli in 11 on the same network. Later in the day, I was treated to Donald Curry stopping Colin Jones in a spectacular performance.

That was just one day. All on free TV.
