i know that's the common answer but based on what? his win over the bigger, limited willard? wins over the much smaller carpentier and gibbons? his two losses (past prime) to tunney? keep in mind, those losses are embarassingly one sided save for one famous round.

the best win on film is firpo and even in that he could have been counted out. i'm not trolling but i'm struggling to see the great appeal with dempsey

other than reports about his style and aggression, his record is lacking

I like Dempsey, but the idea that no Heavyweight could stop Willie Meehan within 4 rounds is ridiculous.
Destroyers such as Tyson, Foreman, Lewis & Liston would smash him.

Was McCall a big clumsy giant?

It depends on whether you'd class him as a giant.

Dempsey wouldnt even fight McCall for three reasons combined: 1. Hes black, 2. He has an iron chin, and 3. He can punch. If you toss in the fact that Dempsey flashes early and McCall comes on late you can pretty much guarantee that Doc Kearns wouldnt let his little piggy bank anywhere near McCall except maybe sparring. But, with that being said, if they somehow climbed into the same ring Dempsey is not knocking out McCall. If the bigger, stronger, harder hitting, faster Tyson couldnt do it in hundreds of rounds of sparring. Dempsey never could. Especially with 10 oz gloves and a neutral corner rule.

I think sparring partner is about right.

That's what Oliver McCall was, a big strong well-conditioned journeyman sparring partner.
He was one of those loudmouth types, got a bit of media attention when he was in big name fighters camps, then got adopted by Don King and moved in a title shot.
Caught Lennox Lewis with a sucker punch and the rest is history.

He took a punch real well, so he was a good sparring partner. He even went the distance with Frank Bruno.

Dempsey would have beaten him all day every day and twice on Sundays.

I don't know Dempsey may be the hardest hitter that McCall has faced other than Lewis. If it happens in the 90's McCall may break down and cry and get the crack-pipe....Dempsey would be the hardest puncher McCall faced other than Lewis who stopped him so its possible Jack can do it.

Yes, but the black and white cat might be avoided because of racial issues.
