    Christ! Based on what?

Kevin Kelley nearly had his measure. He was an exceptional talent no doubt but failed his first true test miserably then took his ball and went home.

Hamed certainly would have struggled to find a woman that loved him anywhere near as much as he loved himself.

Who could ever forget - The Rumble in the Jungle.

    Muhammad Ali
v George Foreman - Mai 20 Stadium in Kinshasa, Zaire (now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo).

Ali regains the World heavyweight title by KO in round 8 of 15.

The undefeated wrecking ball that was George Foreman becomes a victim of the Ali trick-book, and rope-a-dope.

....a frustrated and total gassed Foreman wilts and the rest is history.

Birth date of the 'Maitland Wonder'

The great Les Darcy, sadly taken from us prior to his 22nd birthday, was born in Stadbroke, NSW, on this day 115 years ago.

Darcy won 46 of his 50 bouts, 29 of them by KO. He won the World middleweight title (Australian version) from American Jeff Smith and remained undefeated for a further 17 bouts up until his unfortunately early death.

Darcy is remembered to us by the magnificent statue that was unveiled in his honour earlier this year:

Britton retains the World welterweight title by UD over 15 rounds, despite being down in the 12th.

Jack Britton is probably best remembered for his 20 bout war with Ted "Kid' Lewis, from which he prevailed 9, 6 and 5.

Britton's professional career lasted 25 years and he was 3 time welterweight champion.

    (30 years ago today)

Jim Watt v Sean O'Grady - Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, Scotland, UK.

O'Grady retains the WBC lightweight title by TKO in round 12 of 15.

    From BoxRec:

In this internationally televised title bout from Glascow, Scotland, Lightweight Champion Jim Watt defended his title against rising Sean O'Grady. This was the first title shot for O'Grady, and his inexperience showed the entire bout. Watt's jabs and power punches created eye cuts on O'Grady, who fought back well but whose corner spent the majority of the bout working feverishly on the cuts.

Despite frequent combinations and body shots by both fighters, by holding and 'mixing heads' in clinches Watt did everything possible to make this a downright bloody affair, and got away with as much as he could in his hometown arena. In the end, O'Grady was bleeding badly, and the referee had to stop this fight in the twelfth round.

Enjoyed watching many fights from both Jim Watt & Sean O'Grady.

Both turned out to be half decent boxing commentators later in life.

Johnny Owen v Paul Ferreri - Leisure Centre, Ebbw Vale, Wales, UK.

Owen wins the Commonwealth bantamweight title on PTS over 15 rounds.

    ....Johnny 'The Matchstick Man' Owen.

Owen would sadly pay the ultimate price to boxing. Losing his life in 1980 when challenging Mexican Lupe Pintor for the World bantamweight title.
