I had Young winning by about 3 points..no way did Norton win this fight. The judges were either politically motivated (boxing politics of course) or just blind to the better boxing and scoring..the effectiveness of Young.
I think people were influenced by Young's negative and defensive style. But I definitely think he was robbed. Norton gave up a lot of early rounds and I think that costed him the fight.
I had Young ahead and I thought he should have gotten the NOD. I also had him ahead of Ali but you had to be dominant to beat Ali, he had too much star power to get a decision Young beat Norton
I thought Young won in a competitive fight. Norton made the margin cut down in the mid-later rounds with good bodypunching but I thought Young toke him to school for the most part. No way did Norton deserve that decision imo.
Not only did Norton win the fight but there was no major outcry about the decision at the time ... Young was far less effective against the faster, cominiation punching Norton with his 80" reach than he was against plodding , one shot at a time fighters like Lyle and the Foreman he fought in 77. I do like Young but find it interesting how over rated he is by some on this forum. What are the excuses for his losing to newbie Ozzie twice in a row following Norton ? He was losing two thirds through his pre-Norton tune up against Jody Ballard when the announcers were openly questioning on air was Young over rated. Then post Ozzie he loses to Dokes with only 14 fights ? Young was a defensive minded fighter who was a cutie. He made other fighters look bad ... that being said as a lead he was limited as his record proves ... he beat an old, one dimensional Lyle, went 15 with a grossly fat Ali in a super dull non-fight and upset a Foreman who was better suited for a mental institution than a ring .. give the man his credit and move on. A prime Holmes would have diced him to pieces.
It's ashame but Young lost his hunger too soon in his career and post-prime a few times he could've won(Dokes, Cooney due to the cut) things didn't work out for him. I haven't seen the Occasio fights but I heard he was uninterested. His fault but you can't take away what he was. He had the style to give anyone fits and yes Holmes most likely beats him but that doesn't mean he wasn't a very good fighter in his time. I can't say he didn't live up to his potential because I don't know of people's expectations from him. I can say, Young's career could have turned out better though his resume & wins aren't anything to be ashamed of. Some thought he even beat Shavers in the rematch. He's lucky the knockout loss from the first Shavers fight early in his career didn't ruin him.
Uninterested ? According to Bummy and a few others he won the Norton fight. He was only 29 years old and in line for an immediate rematch for the title and more big money paydays. He was still a top one or two contender in the world ... unmotivated, b.s. ... the fact on Young was plain and simple, he simply was not that good .. while he excelled against certain styles he was exposed by fast , combination punchers ... in his next four fights after Norton he lost to 11 fight novice Ocasio twice and 14 fight pro Dokes ... see a pattern. It's very clear.
