I never saw the Young-Ocassio fights so I don't know. Too bad tommygun or redcobra is not here they could give you a better assessment of Young than I can lol. I thought he won the Norton fight too but I do admit that I feel he wouldn't have had a strong run anyways. At his best I admit he was very good but I'm not sure if he should be remembered as a great fighter. I really, really wish redcobra and/or tommygun was here now...
Their apparance will not change the facts ..Young was a young 29 after the Norton fight .. his style and skill set left him with a ton of milage on his career at that point .. he was a big name fighter and had plenty of big money opportunity in front of him. I felt he lost the Norton fight 9-6 or so but it was very competitive if somewhat boring (a Jimmy Young fight) .. he then gets upset by Ocasio (with an 11-0 record) on national T.V. They schedule an immediate rematch and he loses again. He stops a no name and then gets matched with Dokes (14-0) and loses again. My point is that this all proves the fundamental flaws in Young as a fighter .. his style was far more effective against slower bombers like Lyle or the nutty (at that time) Foreman ... even in his prime he was beatable .. I'm not knocking him, I liked the guy .. just being realistiic ..
No I understand you. I think I even said earlier in this thread that bangers are made for Young. Even though I thought he won the Norton fight it was by no means "easy" for him the whole fight. I wonder why Young fights are hard to come by? I would love to rewatch the Dokes fight then watch the Lyle fights & Occasio fights which I haven't seen. I do agree with you that Holmes would've done a number on him taking nothing away from Young of course.
If Jimmy could punch a little, he would have won. Norton was on the down-slope that night, and was prime for a loss. Norton won though, a solid 9-6-0 in rounds.
One of those really close ones. Could have gone either way,but I just about scored it for Norton. This was the last fight when we saw Jimmy at his best.
I had it close for Norton. Jimmy just didn't have that little extra something to close the show in the 15th round. You can't lay on the ropes in the 15th round of a close fight. Other than maybe the Ali fight, I think he got what he earned in his career. Good fighter, not a great one, not even close.
It was certainly close enough to warrant a rematch. Norton had Larry Holmes to contend with first though, and we recall what happened. Jimmy started his downhill trajectory.
I had it 9-6 for Young, although the fight was closer than that suggests because there were several close rounds and Norton's won rounds were generally more convincing than those won by Young. Not a robbery or at least not a bad robbery. However, I'd say Young won it.
The public was going for Jimmy that night. Everybody always liked him. Norton's mind was still on Ali. He still couldn't get over the judges awarding that fight at Yankee Stadium to an undeserving 'Ali'
