Without the help of those tribes the Spaniards would have taken much longer to conquer the Tenochtitlan which dominated the Mexican Altiplano. The culture that actually dominated the land upon which Teotihuacan sat was the Texcoco which formulated part of a triple alliance with the Aztecs and the Tlacopan to dominate the central Mexican highlands. The Texcoco were NOT Aztecs.

The Spaniards had given up, and were already leaving to their boats to sail back to Spain, but as they were leaving, some other tribes stopped them and told them that they'll help them bring down the Aztec leaders, so Cortez re-made a new plan, and went back to finally bring down the Aztec leaders, and accomplished it months later with the help of those other tribes. Without the help of those tribes, Cortez would've gone back to Spain, a sore loser
