    (Adopts best American broadcasters voice)

In this weeks episode we venture back to 1995 when a young undefeated prospect by the name of Cliff Sarmardin was set to face a then unknown import from South Africa, Lovemore N'dou.

Bringing a 22-0 record, Sarmardin was the hot favourite but N'dou was to be waiting with some of his own tricks and the bout was a hotly contested one, probably Sarmardins toughest ever with debate raging over who had won.

Sadly, it was to be Sarmardins last fight on Australian soil and the penultimate of his career, only lacing them up once more for a very successful American debut, destroying Lee Cargle in three rounds, after which he retired from the fight game. Those of us that had the pleasure to see Cliff live still rate him highly and perhaps he remains one of Australian boxings most intiguing 'what if' cases.

N'dou returned to South Africa for a majority draw decision in an attempt to win the South African Super Featherweight Title, before returning to Australia and becoming a staple of the local boxing scene until this day.

Wins over local favourites J.ustin Rowsell (Rowsells first loss, one of only two in his career, the other being to Ricky Hatton), Renato Cornett were to follow, and a memorable world title win over Naoufel Ben Rabah. He also fought a slew of world title challenges against some of the biggest names in recent history, Sharmba Mitchell, Miguel Cotto, Kermit Cintron and Paulie Malignaggi. Showing that persistence and the will to win he shows in each performance in the ring, he recently acquired the IBO Welterweight Title.

On reflection, its an interesting look at two fighters going in opposite directions, and in hindsight a shame as we weren't to know one very promising career was about to finish.

    Enjoy!

A few years back Cliff contacted me through Boxrec Australian forum. From memory, he doesn't have a copy of the fight.

I hope it gets through to him on the grapevine that it's up here.

I watched this fight in the Commercial Hotel in Charters Towers....and most people were there to see Cliffy Samardin...not Kostya Tszyu...and when the dopey ring announcer called Cliff Samardin.....from Mt Isa...(well everyone in the pub cheered then the unthinkable)...in NSW!!!!....you should've heard the racket after that....poor ol' Cliffy just shook his head....it was bad enough the Victorians claimin' Cliffy but NSW claimin' Mt Isa is abit rich...
....check 1.18 min mark of the first clip.

Cliff Samardin was a great boxer...with no losses to his record, wonder why he quit, with just a national title bout?

You want to know why he retired?? Ring Fenech and ask him.
    Fighters need to be paid!!!!!

Samardin is definately a rare gem. Losing motivation after getting ****ed around by Fenech is no suprise, yet Jeffrey would no doubt go to his grave suggesting Cliff was being paid accordingly.

Well Jeffrey, how much was Cliff paid in his last 3 fights?? Precisely NOTHING!!
