Beautifully said. It annoys me so much how so many supposed boxing "experts" on the Internet pass Tyson's chin off as weak.
i a Boxin'-Xpert on teh internet And IMO Tysons' Chin was weak, cos he was KO'D tons - in 9% of his Fights!! Foreman Hooooooooook! :hat
I think its a borderline stretch. Chuvalo really proved his chin, and even though he wasn't aggressive he was never ever in any kind of trouble. We can't say that about Tyson, but we have to credit his aggression and ability to take some big shots. I would make the distinction but wouldn't say he's far behind. I think Tyson and Ali are in that same ballpark and must people pretty much consider Ali to have one of the greatest chins among HW champs.
His chin was good but Douglas knocked him out and Holyfield had him completely out on his feet. Neither is an all-time great puncher. People can argue and philosophize about he had "a much better chin than Frazier" or whatever, whatever that means, but it's results that count. Tyson wouldn't have been able to absorb the punishment Ali dished out on Frazier in Manila, and Frazier still knew where he was at the end of 14 rounds.
Xpert Post m8 :thumbsup Douglas And Holyfield are both FEATHER-FISTED And Douglas KTFO Tyson cold And VS Holyfeild - Tysons' head was SCRAMBLED And his Vision was in Tripleket in Rounds 6+ And in Round 11 he was v.close to unconscious And out on his feet 100%. Results counts:thumbsup Tyson would of been Dog-Tired after 5 Rounds in Manilla And would of been KTFO in 7 Roundz or less from teh punishment Ali dished-out, Ali had Underated-Power - he KO'D teh IRON-Chinned Foreman FFS! Frazier would of Taken all teh clean-punches Tyson did VS Douglas AND Holyfeild And not be Knocked-Down in teh full 12 Rounds - Frazier would be tappin' his cheen for MORE in teh 12th Round. Foreman Hoooooook! :hat:!::!:
Tyson had a good chin and he took a lot of punishment from a lot of big punchers especially later in his career. I wouldnt say it was iron though. People forget how little he got hit cleanly in the early stages of his career. He was hardly ever hit cleanly, but when he was, he was wobbled by Tucker, Smith, and Bruno. I wouldnt say his chin was Mcall like, but it was good enough, because with a style like he had, he was always going to be in danger of being hit and would have most likely been knocked out more if it wasnt.
People generally consider Ray Mercer to have an iron chin. But when he fought Holyfield he was dropped and IMO would have been stopped but his style is one that allows backpedaling. Any fighter who backpedals when he's visibly hurt or even if he its not visibly hurt gives himself room to recuperate. Mercer was pretty much on his bike from what I remember in that 9th round and was able to stay upright for the remainder of the fight. Tyson on the other hand always moves forward; hurt or not he constantly charges or plods forward and as result the impact of the blow is amplified. So while his chin is among the best amongst the Heavyweight his recuperative abilities are limited by his style. Chuvalo didn't always lead, neither did Mercer, Ali, Foreman, Holmes, etc. So this makes a difference when assessing his chin. I think that considering how battle tested it is, its an ATG Chin.
Tyson's chin was definatley not weak. His problem was overcoming sustained pressure. Everytime he was stopped it was after already taking a beating or through exhaustion. I would give his chin 9/10.
