Would you consider Miguel Cotto and Ivan Calderon to be among the top 10 best fighters to come out Puerto Rico? Cotto, a 3 division champ, arguably the best PR fighter of the '00's, has a very solid resume, including wins over the likes of Shane Mosley, and Zab Judah, willing to fight anyone, has great combinations, a superb body puncher and has solid boxing skills. Calderon, argueably the best pure boxer of the last decade, amazing defensive skills, very little guy schooling and embarrassing dudes twice his size, the Light Flyweight of the past decade, 2nd greatest Strawweight of all time behind the great Finito Lopez, and probably the most succesful PR boxer when it comes to title defense: 18, surpassing even the great Wilfredo Gomez and Tito Trinidad. What do you guys think? i would specially like to hear the opinions of the Ricans on this.
I'd saying calderon is a lock if it's based on ability. the way he schooled so many bigger fighters than himself when he has no power is testimony to his skills. Cotto is a 3 weight world champion but i think more is needed at 154
Maybe lower top 10. I would rank these guys ahead of both of them: Wilfredo Gomez Carlos Ortiz Wilfred Benitez Felix Trinidad Esteban Dejesus Cocoa Kid Jose Basora I think Cotto has a good case for coming after those guys while Calderon is debatable if he should rank ahead of guys like Montanez,Escobar,Rosario,Camacho,Torres and Escalera.
I haven't followed Calderon career much. He has wins over future HOF?? Cotto is maybe going to make to very low top 10. Tree div. champ. Win over future HOF Mosley, solid wins over Zab, Pauli, Torres, Clottey.
Don't forget Juan La Porte, but yeah i think they both have a strong case for top 10 status. I'm glad you mentioned Kid Cocoa aswell. :good
Cotto yes, at the back end, my gut on Calderon is no. Gomez, Ortiz, Torres, Benitez, Trinidad, Cocoa Kid, Basora and Vazquez are probably all ahead of both of them at least. Guys like Rosario, De Jesus, Molina, etc. are arguably ahead of Calderon as well.
