Something I have noticed about Mayweather, he goes back in a straight line when he does not see that perfect opportunity to get off first.

Castillo did not pressure Mayweather per say, not in the conventional way by throwing lots of punches etc, he built a momentum of pressure, now he did this by constantly using shoulder/head feints as he rolled foward, which maneuvered Mayweather out of the centre, and back toward the killzone. Mayweather would go straight back when Castillo rolled foward, because when Mayweather does not see that perfect opportunity to get off first on you, because! your using those head/shoulder feints, he has a tendency to move back, take you into the killzone, then he will either reset you by taking you one way (say to the left), then the other (say to the right), then when he has reset you, and has you dancing to his tune, he will catch you in transition when your trying to catch up with him, he will leap in and catch you with the left hook as your turning(Corrales), or!, he will go straight back on the line, then when his back hits the ropes, most people think they have him where they want him, and so throw combination's at him, only that is what he wants, cause if you dont set the combo up with the jab, then go to the body and bring the shots up, and you just get a rush of blood to the head throwing punches, it makes it easier for Mayweather to roll with them, or it makes it easier for him to move if you dont connect/pin him down with the first punch.

What Castillo did, when he got to the periphery of the killzone, was wait on Mayweather, applying that mental pressure, which in turn did not give Mayweather that perfect opportunity to slip away, or draw him in so he could roll with punches then slip away, which is what made Mayweather feel very uncomfortable, as he had little offense to work his defense off. Mayweather was forced to be the guy getting off first, only he was having to do it whilst under mental pressure, mental pressure cause Castillo was pressing him off the front foot where he had little room for maneuver and so felt a little uncomfortable.

There were times when Mayweather would throw punches from out of range, now early on Castillo was using the game plan, only it was not playing as much dividends and he would of liked, simply because although he was doing the right thing, he just needed to apply a little more pressure, take advantage of those spots where he maneuvered Floyd where he wanted him, those places where he made Mayweather feel uncomfortable.
Early on Castillo, whilst he had been implementing his game plan, was just missing that extra bit of pressure, even though he was making Floyd feel uncomfortable, he will still giving Floyd just enough time to think and get off, but in the mid rounds he began to apply a bit more pressure, he built that momentum of pressure, but stayed smart, still made sure he kept his head/shoulder feints going as he maneuvered Floyd into the killzone, then was able to pick his opportunities better when to attack, when he saw Floyd was looking like he was in uncomfortable positions.

DLH showed showed that against Mayweather, if you press him near the ropes, but do it by using the jab, that Mayweather can be neutralized somewhat, cause Mayweather goes straight back in a line when attacked.

I think the idea when pressing Mayweather is to press him from periphery of the killzone, dont let him draw you into the corners looking to fetch him out, cause that give him opportunities to get away. Maintain distance, wait on him so you can maneuver him to where you want him, then attack, but attack from behind the jab, go down stairs, bring your shots up, now this is not easy to do against Mayweather cause he is a smart fighter, you to be mindful not to fall alseep behind the wheel, cause he will try and use the movement to reset you, then when he has you dancing to his tune, he will look to catch you in transition when resetting you, that way he can get off first and get himself out of a vulnerable spot. You also have to make sure you keep you shoulder/head feints going as you roll foward, and maintain distance at all times, dont forget, counter punchers need/want to draw you into mid range, cause that is where they can counter, roll with your punches better.

Thats my two sense I what I saw anyway. :thumbsup

Very good analysis, youve actually got a point there kind of similar foot work to Mikkel Kessler (not that im saying Kessler is p4p 1 ) but he does tend to move back and forth in straight lines

Castillo had success against Floyd 8 yrs ago in 2002, and then got beat more convincingly in the immediate rematch. That fight has no bearing on the type of fighter that Mayweather is now. He's bigger, stronger, smarter, and has more experience. People really need to let that fight go. Its sad the people have to go back to an 8yr old fight, to try and find some evidence that Mayweather can be beaten.

Castillo also weighed in at 9 1/2 lbs more than Mayweather. He was the bigger and stronger man in the ring too. What I also think some people forget about when they cite Castillo's 'pressure' on Floyd was that he applied it intelligently. He wasn't averse to moving back out of range to avoid punches as well and he also never forgot about defence in order to land.

In hindsight, I actually give major props to Floyd.
(Castillo was a beast back then, don't see any LW around today that could **** with him)

Very true. Floyd said he hurt his shoulder in the first fight didn't he? I think people point to it because Castillo seems to have come closest to winning against Floyd and obviously made him uncomfortable at times - something we're not used to seeing.

I completely agree though, Floyd is not the same fighter than as he is now. He is also, I would add, offensively more vicious than he ever was before. He proved he CAN stand his ground and hit in combination and plenty hard enough too - ask Shane Mosley.

Some people seem to think that Floyd will always hit and move and counter punch. It simply isn't true - he has every punch in the book and he can hit hard enough with either hand to hurt solid welterweights. So when developing a plan that involved pressure it assumes Floyd will be on the backfoot and always being the weaker lighter hitting 'boxer'. That simply isn't always true.

It's much like when Floyd fought Hatton. Hatton brought intense pressure but what he didn't figure into his gameplan was Floyd hitting back, hard. Hatton sought to wear Floyd down but eventually got worn down himself.

Hatton brought the wrong kind of pressure to shut down a defensive wizard down. Intense pressure is not the way, languishing inside, trying to hit arms, chest, is not the way to pressure Mayweather. You have to shut him down offensively, which means you have to be economical with your pressure, cause his offense works off his defense, which is your offense.

If anything Hatton worse himself down, due to all his holding, grappling, once he had done that, the gap between him and Mayweather got bigger, Mayweather got more separation to get his punches off, and we all know Hatton gets picked off when ever there is any separation, when he is not your chest, then when he started dropping rounds, he got desperate as he felt he was behind, so instead of stepping off line like he had been doing, he threw caution to the wind, came in on the line throwing a left hook, Mayweather stepped off the line and countered him on the way in.

Very true. Looking back at that to find a formula for success, won't work. Because if it would, then Castillo would have been at least as equally as effective in the rematch.

I am not trying to compare but the rematch between pac and jmm happened 3 yrs later and it was every bit as close as the first fight. Pbf rematced cas right away and won by a wider margin to leave no doubt so in the imediate rematch he tried his gameplan and kept getting right hands in the nose

I'm not knocking JLC I think he had a great gameplan he applied intelligent pressure cut the ring off got inside and went to the body, it was beautiful to watch and text book on how to apply intelligent pressure. With that said there was an immediate rematch and PBF showed that JLC couldn't duplicate that succuess. Intelligent pressure is one key in beating PBF but not the only key you need atleast 2 or 3 because the guy can fight all styles.
