Remember Jorge "El Guajiro" Gutiérrez?? I have heard rumors that he defected a while ago. Is it true? Sydney 2000 [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm4VlmZ8Fvg[/ame] Full fight: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYIqF4uz3XQ[/ame]
He debuted in March. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=530911&cat=boxer It's definitely the same guy; the birthdate matches: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorge_Guti%C3%A9rrez
Well for a 2000 Olympian, what did you expect? At a bare minimum he could have now been 27 - and that's assuming he'd won middleweight gold as a seventeen year old (the cutoff age for participation).
I saw the fight down here. He looked good for a guy who hasn't fought in a while, even though, the guy he fought wasn't much. Slipping punches and good power. Smart fighter, used the jab a lot to set up his other punches.
What kind of physical condition was he in? The pro debut was at Cruiserweight and his amateur heyday was at Middleweight. Could you see him hanging with some of the other contenders that are up in his age bracket any time soon? For instance - Afolabi, Minto or Herelius within a year or two?
He seemed to be in good shape. He wasn't overweight, or, anything like that. I think with a couple of more fights, to feel a little more comfortable in there, he could test the waters. He had good defense, head movement, and was disciplined with his jab. I thought his power was pretty good.
It makes me happy he is still hanging around, he used to be very good. I hope he can still achieve something.
WTF?! He defected and turned pro?! Guy was amazing and one of my favourite (Cuban) ams. Have several of his fights on film. Damn what we gonna get next, Vinent turning pro?
Not often we get chess references at ESB...well done. Capa was a one of a kind...a "natural" if you will.
