That is correct. Khan was looking to fight Marquez at the time. Marquez decided to fight Katsidis and Maidana went to the WBA to get the fight. Khan had options: Fight Maidana or vacate the belt. Anyone with half a brain knows the facts.
You're right, and rightfully so, but I hugely disagree that he only took this fight because he had to. What you has said has pretty much been the excuse after Khan has signed for Maidana.

Freddy, Amir and Team Con wanted none of it. Wake up son. Maidana was fuming, when he forced purse bids, GBP had to scramble to get a deal. They wanted JMM or Casamayor, that is a fact. Also it is interesting to note HBO said they will only show Khan vs Maidana, and no one else. I think that forced GBP into making a fight they didn't really want to make.

Maidana did not want it in the UK. Khan promised his UK fans that he'd fight here next, so he'd clearly dispute where the fight would be, would he not? He wanted JMM first, I'm not denying that. But who wouldn't? Most casual fans I know say to this day that JMM would beat the **** out of Khan. His casual fans are where the £££ comes from, not you. In his letter to the WBA, Maidana, pointed out his difficulties in trying to get Khan to fight him despite Maidana being the WBA interim champion for well over a year since beating Victor Ortiz by a 6th round TKO in June 2009. Khan, instead of taking on Maidana, has chosen to fight Dmitri Salita and Paulie Malignaggi. Maidana wanted the WBA to either make Khan fight him or else have Khans title taken from him. And that is why Khan has finally decided to fight him. He had the choice to fight or vacate.
