I've noticed that parrying shots with my elbows seems to work out really well for me. I'm pretty good at using the traditional parry with the front of the glove but using my elbows seems to work out better for me and makes it easier to counter shots. Not only that but this would be a more effective method for self defense in the streets because the traditional parry relies on the size of the boxing glove. As long as you don't elbow the other guy in the face this is legal in a match right? I don't see why it wouldn't be.
Um...yeah, you're always taught to block shot to the body with the elbows. And I always do it, and I was never warned for it. Its completely legal.
I believe the OP is acutally talking about blocking head shots with the forearms. It's not technically a parry though.
I used the term parry because thats the best way I could describe it. It's more of a parry than a block. I don't see a lot of people use it in boxing so I was curious if it was even legal.
Do you have any videos or pictures that could demonstrate how you are doing this? I think this might be what your talking about (bottom part of this picture) This content is protected (photo courtesy of Phil Wright, trainer at Revolution Gym in England)
I do that, I was told to be careful because it could look like a deliberate attempt to injure, but they didn't tell me to stop doing it.
turning your opponent on the ropes in frowned upon too, but looks good and the crowd loves it.i think thy are both skills worth learning:good
I have pretty high bone density from weight lifting so this shouldn't be a problem. The other day I was up against a guy in sparring who wasn't extremely powerful but still had some force behind his shots and I barely felt anything when my elbows were getting hit.
i was told by another guy at the gym to do it, for body shots at least, block with your elbows and kind of like chop down on their wrist as the shot comes in. he did it too me and it hurt like hell. seemed dirty to me, especially as he used it in the gym in sparring and even drills.... needless to say i ignored that piece of advice
