Do you agree with this statement regarding Manny Pacquiao?

It is hard to put Pacquiao's achievements into words. [Bruce] Lee transcends sport and culture alike and I think in years to come, Manny's name will do the same. Think of the great fighters down the years, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Muhammad Ali and I do think when we look back on his achievements, Manny will sit alongside them.

I have been in this sport for more than 30 years and have marvelled at many fighters and their achievements, but when I think back over the past decade, that he started as a wild, crazy southpaw of a kid on the Las Vegas undercards, it is hard to think of anything more remarkable than what Pacquiao, together with Roach, has achieved.

 

To a degree yes. Not sure about the Bruce Lee part.

 

The obvious critiscm of this statement is the quantity of fights. People like Archie Moore, Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong and the like all had 100 plus fights. There was one lineal undisputed title handed down by one great to another. What Pacquiao has done is no doubt extremely impressive but it is in a certain context which limits it to a degree. He has beaten legit legends in Morales, Barrera, Marquez IMO (and if Cotto keeps fighting for a few years he could be put in that bracket). Sugar Ray Robinson beat around 10 legit legends in his career. I could definatly place Pacquiao along the likes of Ali, Duran, Hagler etc but not the greats of the 1940's-1950's. The sport has changed a lot since then even in terms of number of rounds etc.

What has impressed me is the stylistic changes Manny has made under Roach. He is such a versatile southpaw, he could beat anyone around his weightclass in history.

 

He has Bruce's hairstyle & Poses down.

 

I'd put him in the SRL-type category (but, as highly as I rate SRL, I don't rate him as highly as a lot of other people do). I wouldn't put him in the SRR / Ali one.

What a joke.

The only people he will be "great" to are people who don't know anything about boxing and the vampires that feed off of them.

 

he won't reach an atmosphereic level like those guys mentioned above. the world is a lot bigger these days with globalization and the internet..which means he wasn't shoved in people's faces on a black and white television screen when it comes to popularity

He's got the potential. He's definitely a once in a lifetime generation fighter. contrary to bald head slick's comments.

 

but guys like Ali, Leonard, Marciano, Joe Louis... didn't have as many fights.

 

I don't know. Time will tell, I guess. Lee and Ali had a larger than life personality. Pac seems to just smile and wave. He's doing things to expand his horizon but I tend to think he's a rather simple guy who just so happens to be a great boxer. I don't think we can start voting yet until his career is over.

 

Lee was in movies, which is a popular medium for everyone. Ali had the Nam thing, which was a blessing in disguise because he became a national figure. Most chicks know the name Muhammad Ali, but most dudes AND chicks don't know the names Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao is a politician now, but it's in a country that's not on the map with global affairs.

Lee (cinema) / Ali (Vietnam War) > Pac (Boxing/Congress) / Floyd (Boxing)

 

So 95% of all people involved in boxing don't know anything about it , but you and the small minority of racially motivated *****s do....

 

Well although you make sense, don't forget that Lee and Ali were both fluent in English and more educated than PAC. Pacquiao is going to do great things for his people.

 

Pac will be exposed eventually. Nothing stays buried.
