how do you explain that Lamotta was able to beat SRR that one time?

What do you think was different compared to the other 5 times that he lost?

Lamotta, a very talented fighter was better on the night, and most of the other fights were hard fought.

Nothing really needs explaining too much imo.If Ray had smashed him to bits in al of the other fights it might have stuck out as an oddity, but he didnt

A crowding fighter can give a vastly superior boxer puncher trouble.

Because LaMotta actually was a pretty good fighter who was able to push Robinson in all of his fights.

Because Robinson was playing in the bowling club he just bought, instead of training properly. :D

Like Basilio, he was an ultra tough pressure fighter that fought at a controlled pace that wouldnt see himself getting too reckless or gassing out. Stubborn resilience and strength that needs to be respected and can at times dictate the pace. Which is perhaps the most effective style against Robinson. I say effective, because theres no such thing as a bad styles matchup against the undisputable GOAT.

This is why i pick Hagler and Monzon to beat him. These qualities, plus elite level boxing skill for Hagler. Monzon has the same qualities and is a massive overwhelming MW.

The fight that stands out is rather the last one in a way. From what I've understood Ray never came close to stopping LaMotta in any of the others.

Garfield, if you read this, what was the reasoning at the time when LaMotta got stopped in their last fight? Was he thought to be a bit past it and/or weight drained, or was it just viewed as Ray at his most skilled and deadly?

I have radio commentary of the 4th fight and Ray stuns Lamotta a few times in it.

I think one or 2 of Robinson's "Wins" should have went to Lamotta.

  12. :good la motta was a ****ing beast, he would give the hell to any middle in history. really i think that lamotta would have the balls to fight against george foreman, mike tyson ,joe frazier or joe louis. of course he would lose but he would fight

That was Robby's lowest weight for any of their six bouts, and Jake came in 16 pounds heavier. Fight number five was very close according to reports, and LaMotta may have come away with a second win had different judges been scoring. To compete as often as Ray did, there would inevitably be lesser performances, and SRR was dealing with a naturally much heavier ATG. Again, Jake was an amateur champion at 175, while Robby won Golden Gloves at 126 and 135. Take a look at the weights of Robinson's other top opponents over the first five years of his career, as well as his own weight. The Bronx Bull stands out. It took somebody who was a top five P4P ATG to manage a 5-1 record against that kind of battler, and it was no kind of cinch. For LaMotta to write that they came out even in those bouts despite the official record is no kind of stretch. And does the Valentine's Day Massacre wind up the way it does if Jake is in the same kind of shape he was for Mitri and Dauthuille II? (Robinson admitted that he and his team counted on LaMotta being weight drained, and less than his best, just as Ray Leonard did three decades later for Duran in New Orleans.)

Here, starting at 3:00, Ray himself indeed admits the expectation of LaMotta being weight drained as a key component of the strategy used. (Jake himself discusses his career issues with weight earlier in the program, and all three parts of this episode of "The Way it Was" should be viewed by anybody interested in this rivalry. LaMotta's participation in particular makes this possibly the most interesting boxing retrospective of all these classic TWIW programs presented by Curt Gowdy.)

LaMotta was a tank of a middleweight while Robinson weighed barely over 140 pounds. Jake had shown how dangerous he was prior to the bout by defeating number 2 ranked welterweight contender California Jackie Wilson. Robinson really had to pull out everything to beat LaMotta so it's no surprise that he dropped one out of six.
