Once again a trainer steals the show on 24/7 - good stuff on Roberto Garcia

Despite HBO's over the top PPV advertisement series has a predictable pattern since it's purpose is to sell one-sided fights as competitive (the pattern here being "Oh Manny is unprepared to the degree to have a tough night with Plasterito", there's some substance behind all the flashy Hollywood style.

More than the fighters themselves, two trainers stood out the most in the past two 24/7 series, one being Brother Nazim Richardson, and the other a former world champion, Roberto or Robert Garcia. Nazim needs no introducton, as Hopkins puts it "there are many coaches in boxing but few teachers", and I'm glad HBO gave Roberto some air time as well. As young as Garcia is (who became a successful trainer sooner than many of his opponents retired, Joel Casamayor for one), he seems like a natural at his job, a good guy outside of the ring and a very valuable person to the community, giving plenty back. It's no surprise he's a successful trainer at just 35: his father, Eduardo was also a coach too (trained Fernando Vargas) while his little brother Mikey is a top FW prospect - it's a great boxing family.

I liked the bit where he spends time with the kids and teach them discipline to keep them off the streets and stuff. It's not an elite squad like the Wild Card Gym or something half empty as Roger Mayweather's LV training site, it's a well balanced boxing gym with solid professionals and many youngers. And it was actually nice to see that the first Robert Garcia Boxing Academy Fundraiser was a success.

All together, getting to know Roberto Garcia better was something positive out of 24/7, and I look forward to hear what he has to say in the corner to a fighter who was picked because Freddie Roach "saw is last two fights". Certainly a challenging situation.

Is Wild Card really elite? I thought a lot of non-elites trained there.

They do. Lots of people with no experience or only looking to work out can come train there. It's not private in the same way as Roger May's gym.

Why wouldn't he? There were actually talks of Roach training him, who said he'd love to work with Margarito, but Tony chose Roberto in the end, most likely because of language & location.

He must believe marg didn't know, or he just doesn't care about it either way. Did they ever explain this in episode 2 and 3?:think

but there was a moment that it seemed like he wanted to hog the spotlight in episode 2 when he said i don't want the pac camp to make excuses about why they lost to AM. i want them to give me my due that I'm a great trainer and i got AM prepared for the fight. in general he does seem like a great, classy guy. now brandon rios seems like a dick.

i'm glad Garcia is getting some air time, i've been following the dudes training career for some time now and he is a very very good trainer, he and his father trained vargas, brought up victor ortiz and brandon rios from the start, trained joan guzman, brian viloria and recently started training nonito donaire, he doesn't teach the style he fought, the guys a great all-rounder like roach, each of his fighters fight/fought in a different style and instead of changing them he works with what he's got, he's been trying to teach margo some head movement and even got him to try box in his last fight, its too late to do anything with margo though so i hope garcia has success with his other fighters.

i'm not exactly sure but the garcia family had a huge fall out because of something to do with victor ortiz, i think grandpa and his dad are still ok but his brother eduardo jr left...

    flatlander probably knows the story.
