I myself have enjoyed the super six, its a great idea. Unfortunately the entire tournament, even though it continues, has failed! I would love to see this another version of this, it would be great to have one at every weight although difficult at some weights (hw's obviously wouldnt work as you have the klit brothers refusing to fight each other and that ***git Haye). If we actually look at the tournament as a whole though, nearly all the faults are that of Showtime. Showtime failed this tournament as much as certain boxers killed it! 1) Why wasnt their from the beginning one, two or even three doctors on the payroll who watched over this event? That way we wouldnt have family doctor 'Shaw-hi' in the mix, instead we would have a few impartial doctors and not the bull**** we have now. Also their would be nobody able to claim Kessler is scared of Green...as we have seen on here with people claiming he is faking injury. 2) How was it ever fair that certain boxers (well just Ward) fought on home-turf every single fight? Thats like your football team playing at home every game for the entire season! 3) The money bull**** - why wernt all the contracts sorted from the beginning, we hear Dirrell's people acting like Jerry McGuire with 'show me the money' bull****, why wasnt all this done at the beginning? 4) Surely all boxers should be under contract and not allowed to fight until the tournaments over or they are eliminated? Anyone dropping out for whatever reason should not be allowed to fight again until the tournaments over, so now that should mean Taylor, Dirrell and Kessler. If Dirrell fights again in the next 6 months or so then this is another **** up by Showtime (im guessing Kessler wont). 5) Why does the Showtime website have Johnson under an american flag? He was born and raised in Jamaica? This was also supposed to be 3 v 3 USA V Europe, we've now ended up with 4 north americans and only 2 euros.
Hate to admit it but Aaran does have a point. The Stupid 6 has been a bust and it does appear Showtime ****ed up.
Agreed.. One of the good points of failing is that there will be a template of what not to do when making these tournaments in the future. I wouldn't be surprised if HBO tried to put something together just to top Showtime.
read my post, i said 'even though it continues, it has failed'. Of course im going to continue watching it but the tournament has failed so badly its unreal, we only have 3 of the original 6 left! Its not even super six anymore....its super five! All these points could have easily been done before the tournament started, if it had, it wouldnt be in the mess it is in now. Ward v Bika has nothing to do with the super six....thats how ****ed the tournament is!
Who said that? The Showtime system failed the tournament, yeah we have had great fights throughout the year.....but 3 of those 6 fighters arnt even fighting in the tournament now, its almost unrecognisable line-up from when it started. Ward v Dirrell was a huge match-up for the tournament, one of the biggest...not happening now because the safety measures I listed above arnt in place.
Who cares about the actual tournament? The whole point of this was to have the best fighting the best, and this is what has happened so far. Taylor and Kessler getting injured are a normal part of the sport. The only downside of this whole thing is that the there have been long breaks in between fights (although most top fighters only fight twice a year anyway) and that we found out that Dirrel is a coward. Would you rather have seen Abraham beat Euro level fighters and Ward continue to face nobodies? All this dramatic overreaction, I swear boxing fans just want something to complain about. The Super Six is one of the best things to happen recently, your outrage is misguided.
like i said, the super six is a great idea and has been good....but it has failed to do what it could have done, if only a few minor things had been put in place at the beginning of the tournament by Showtime.
Most of your points revolve around Dirrell, but the truth is that you can't force fighters to fight. Even with doctors and iron-clad contracts, a coward like Dirrell can always claim headaches etc without proving anything. The only thing they should have done was select Bute (if he was willing) instead of Dirrell who had shown cowardly tendencies in previous fights. I don't agree with the neutral venue idea. It is good in theory but boxing is a niche sport which needs whatever hometown support that it can muster. Oakland for Ward is the same as Montreal for Bute or Berlin for Abraham, they provide good sized crowds and the most money possible. Corrupt judges are a different issue entirely, and a hometown crowd should not be predicated on it. Kessler had no reason to lie about his injury an pull out of his fight with Green of all people. He should be allowed to fight Bute in the spring if it's possible. Glen Johnson lives in the US, who cares about his flag.
Judge it on the fights, I dont care about what happened behind the scenes I am just a fan, we dont need to worry about that stuff. All the fights have been very good and has given all the fighters more exposure. I think it has been very good. It hasnt failed it still going on and getting very good viewing figures all round the world.
1. As this tournament was a new idea, they probably didn't appreciate the nuances or possible events that could derail it in the future. If they do it again (hear there's one with cruisers possibly), hopefully they'll learn from their mistakes. 2. They could have their own doctor to clear fighters and that is a good idea, but it's not going to stop fighters from having and listening to their own doctor. 3. A set schedule should've been announced at the beginning. Agree there. Every fighter should've had one "home" match and one "away" match announced for dates before the thing started. But what I'd've done is gotten rid of hometown refereeing and judging. The only part of "hometown" we need is the fans, not the bureaucracy helping the guy win. 4. Money as well could've been decided at the beginning, although if you hold fast on that you may get good fighters say "I'm not going to deal with this, this tournament needs me, I don't need it."
If there is a handful of good matches out of the rest of it, and one clear winner, than people will forget about these problems. They need to stop all the delays though, and get the last few rounds of fights completed before we're all old
