Well here are the facts. Per our contract I was entitled to 20% of Kermits earnings. I did not take a dime from him until he signed with Main Events. So that means despite investing 10's of thousands of dollars in him I didnt take what I was contractually entitled to because at that time he need the money much more than I did. I felt that eventually there would be plent of money for everyone. I can also state with out doubt that miney became the issue for Kermit once he started making 6 figure paydays. He couldnt stand handing over that percentage to Marshall and I even though we worked for free and paid out towars his career for 4 years. And yes it was an investment! Were we not entitled to recoup the money and time we put in him. Give me a ****ing break. When you go to work you expect to get paid dont you?
I also said he submited in sparring to lesser fighters. The facts are the fact. The sparring occured at the gym in upper darby, and it was at the time we were preparing for Elio Ortiz.
its possible, i have seen and heard quiet alot of sarring stories where the better fighters are getting beaten up, but its a whole different thing in the ring, ofcourse you wouldn't understand this when it comes to old man river.
this is legit. i remember when it happened, everyone in the philly boxing scene talked about it. hopkins even gave some quotes about it at the time.
Nine of what I said is personal opinion. It is all hands on facts gained through working with him for 6 years. As for why I am here... well Kermit and Manny think nothing of insulting Marshall and I in website, newspaper, and TV interviews. A few weeks ago Kermit was almost universally hailed as a fighter reborn with a new and improved skill set, and Manny Steward was the genius behind it. Now there is pots after post trashing Kermit and Manny. Well the facts are the facts. He is not new and improved. He never would have struggled with a 15-6 guy when we had him. Manny is not the Wizard of Oz of boxing. A good trainer? Of course. But not so much that he can ridicule Marshall and I for the way Kermit was trained. Same for Kermit. When he was with us and listened he was 24-0 wih 22 ko. 2 of those KOs over ring magazine top 10 rated guys. With Manny he is going life and death with club fighters. Guys that never cracked the top 10. As for making up the Hopkin story thats rediculous. He also dropped Kassim Ouma in sparring with a single left hook. But I also revealed that he submitted in sparring to lesser guys like Yusef Mack, Erik Mitchell, Derrik Parks, and Andrew Lewis. So dont try to tell me I am making this up to sell myself. People wanna know the real story and there it is. You here all the time that managers and trainers screw fighters, well it goes both ways.
Yes Hopkins exacts words were, "this kids the real deal" It eas quote that was repeated live on the NBC broadcast of his fight with Elio Ortiz
No doubt. I am not knocking on you at all for the money issue and him being an investment. It's just crazy (and I see all the time with fighters) that somehow the fighter feels like they owe nothing to the original managers that brought them up. Even in movies like Cinderella Man, you remember that fighter Clint Eastwoood had at the beginning? It was like once they are famous they get a big head and dont want to give them ****. I understand however. Remember, fighters like Kermit take all the risk. They are the ones who take the blows to the head, who get injured, who risk it all. 20% seems like a lot to me. I mean you have to consider he gets half taken away for taxes, then another 20 from you, that leaves him with what, 30%? I dunno man, you seem kind of salty for all the wrong reasons. If I was Kermit, I might have negotiated a flat fee to you guys. But its nothing personal, just business. I dont see you guys getting along at all in the future, I take back what I said about you guys squashing this. Its all about the money it seems. Good luck with your future fighters though, I hope they make it big.
ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY FOR KERMIT. SInce you do not seem to know the facts about percentages in boxing I will give you the industry standard. 33 1/3 percent for manager. 10 perent for the trainer. 5 percent for a strength and conditioning coach.whci comes out to 48 1/3 percent to the fighters team. Marshall took 20 percent as comanager/trainer and I took 20 percent as comanager/strength and conditioning coach. Which means Kermit got 8 1/3 percent over what he would have under a standard contract. Not to mention I didn;t take a cent until his 14th fight. So lets say I took my 20 percent over the first 10 fights at and average of 800 dollars a fight. So that would mean I would hae made 1600.00 dollars for that first years. So for the 10-12 thousand it cost me to support him I recoverd 1600.00. What about my time? 4 hours a day 6 days a week. I dont even wanna figure out what that is. And the bottom line is I didnt take the money. So dont tell me I was in it for the money and wasnt looking out for him. What job do you do that you dont wanna get paid for?
Well lets take my father for instance. His sport is soccer. He played when he was a kid living in Medellion, Colombia. He grew up poor, was a farmer. Went to college in Colombia and actually graduated with a masters in engineering. Got a job offer to the United States of America and ended up working for Gannett Flemming. He worked full time, designing bridges takes up a good amount of time. But his passion was soccer. He was so passionate about that damned sport, that he actually started a soccer club (which has about 1200 players in it now). Eventually he got to be the Varsity soccer coach for the high school team. This ****ing guy, every day, would dedicate 5/6 hours after work to help develop soccer players. He even got offered money from the high school, WHICH HE DENIED. HE DID NOT GET A ****ING CENT. He did it all for the players, most of which actually got to turn pro. Most who played in College (including my brother). He is 72 years old. And he still works with his club developing players. So you ask what job do I want to do without getting paid for it? Well I tell you what. boxing is a ****ing sport still, and I would do it for free. And a lot do it for free and dont expect **** out of it. Take a look at Kelly Pavlik. His trainer did driveways (still does driveways) for a living and trained Kelly for free. He opened up his gym because he LOVED his sport (remember that HBO countdown?) Its because he had passion for the sport. Something you and Kermit simply dont seem to have. but then again, its all about the business right? No wonder he left your ass. And by the way, 20% is still too much. If I came off the street and paid you $30,000 a year to train me full time you would do it in a heartbeat. And you couldnt even get mad if I made it big time. What I am trying to say here, is that dont expect to develop boxers at an early age and see only dollar signs. Do it for the ****ing kids. Who knows, they might even pay you back generously one day. Maybe you can land a contract with a real pro too. Having someone like Kermit on your resume would be good to show.
I dont train boxers to make a living. I dont recall any of your pst stating that your father invested 10's of thousands of dollars in any of these players. Or let them live with him. Also I am in the gym daily with young amateurs. Our gyms name is KINGS gym aka Kids In Need of Guidance. Its obvious to me that you have no idea what the sport/business of boxing is all about. By your logic all trainers and managers shoudl work for free. All they need is a pat on the back right.
yeah he only invested 1,000,000's of dollars with his time. He is an engineer, rememeber that. Time is money. The fact that you took him in, and then act all crazy because you think something is owed to you seems dubious at best. When I see your gym name 'Kids In Need of Guidance' - I think of trainers who do it out of the goodness of their heart. Not do it for money. Just train the kids so they can make something out of themselves instead of living on the street (I've been to reading - shithole at best). I do not think of trainers who hope to make money off of these kids. I am not saying all they need is a pat on the back, but cmon dude. Its not like you are a world class trainer who can take a fighter to the next level. I mean you might be, but not to some fighter who hires pros. Look at Mayweather Sr, he is a hired gun. But they are far and few. They start by training for free basically. and there are a lot of trainers who work for free. Here check this out Joe Calzaghe - trained by his dad Shane Mosley - trained by his dad Eric Morales - trained by his dad the list goes on and on. I dunno man. You come on this board saying Kermit screwed you, and then go off on this tangent like he owes you something because he lived with you. I would figure someone (especially with a Gym called that) to have Kermit live for free and not expect anything out of it at all. And if Kermit made it big, let him loose with all the luck. You seriously need to change the name of your gym, its misleading.
I am also thinking about starting up a gym. Except it is going to be paid all by me. And if kids come in there wanting help, I'll do it for free and not expect anything in return. I dont even box! I've had my share of street fights and hit the bag, but man I ****ing love this sport. And going by 'my logic', yes, all I would want would be a ****ing pat on the back. I dont even think I would care for that. I guess that is the difference between you and me. Just gotta wait till I get enough money to open one up. Who knows, maybe one day my fighters can fight yours. I'm still young, I've got time.
Do you think that those guys fathers dont get paid? LOL You don't think Kelly pays Jack Lowe? He does because I know first hand. You dont think Floyd pays his uncle? Or Tito paid his father. I now for a fact Tito pays his father. Its called taking care of those that take care of you. When I first got involved with Kermit it was strictly business. I met him in the gym. The deal was I will foot the bill for all his expenses, be his strength and conditioning coach, and Marshall would train him. I he makes it we all get paid. If he doesn't no harm done. He didnt owe me a cent. The friendship developed after the boxing relationship. And who are you to question my or Marshalls ability to train? We got Kermit at 19 yrs old and he had never boxed. 5 years later he is 24-0 22 kos. NABF and WBO interim champ. We also train Travis Kauffman from the beginning of his amateur career. 2 time national amateur champion and international gold medalist. Captain of US Team. 10-0 as a pro. What are your credentials? Oh yeah you got in a few street fights. Fact is you have no boxing knowledge what so ever. Not as a fighter, manager, promoter, or trainer. So you are in no position to challenge my expertise in the boxing world. The fact that you would even consider opening a gym proves my point. How are you going to teach them when you know nothing yourself. You are going to get kids hurt.
Your not taking the money that was yours... is not Pavlik's fault. If this is a business, and you're a businessman, treat it like a business. Don't point fingers after the fact and try to ruin a young man.
Sure, that doesn't change the fact that for all I know, you made the Bernard Hopkins story up in order to add to your credibility. Cintron is simply not good enough to give Hopkins any trouble.
