Agreed. Good for Joe C. Now he needs to stop doing coke. On the Jones thing, while I agree with Seamus, which makes me feel bad, In don´t think it has anything to do with this thread and shouldn´t be discussed here.
Allow me to presume to speak for Seamus here. I believe his post was inspired by kmac's little dig. And while Prime Roy would almost certainly have beaten Joe, It would probably have been his toughest challenge. I think that's all the dude was saying.
touche. jones was brought up previously and the discussion has a place here (albeit minimally). I (and other jones fans) get defensive about the postman/garbageman mainly cause people randomly use that to discredit an entire career when the "glass chin" argument doesn't work. **** me, i HATE calzaghe but i'm willing to acknowledge his strengths and weaknesses but some cats just take a **** on jones like they're r kelly and he's a teenage girl
All fighters fight lesser opposition between the big fights but Thornton/Lucas/Brannon were USBA champ, Lucas a future WBC champ, Pazienza an ex-champ, Brannon an undefeated prospect And Calzaghe wasn't considered a big fight or name until he beat Lacy, which you'd know if you followed the sport. He was even getting laughed at on British forums, his career was considered a joke with all the cancelled fights he pulled out of and all the nobodies he fought for years. Between 2000-2006 he wasnt even facing anyone on the level of those fighters you just laughed at bar Mitchell
im no Jones fanboy nor am i a Calzaghe man so i think i can speak from a neutral point of view. JC got in, made his money, and got out without getting hurt, which is an ideal career from his (and most boxers and thier families) point of view. Anyone who questions RJJ's talent frankly has either an agenda or doesnt know a thing about boxing IMO
Calzaghe, Jones, DM, and the like all have pretty weak resumes. I´m not qustioning their talent but what I´m saying is that you have to prove that talent. In the more recent times this didn´t really happen when we compare it too past times thus I can´t rank those fighters too high because beeing proven is the most important thing IMO.
absolutely agree. while i think jones' resume gets too much criticism and is better than generally portrayed, it is pretty weak considering where he gets placed all time. I have him WAY too high on my list based on talent but when asked to back it up with key wins, i can't. he simply didn't prove himself against other greats (as you said)
well yeah, some people on here have Jones in the top 20 of all time, which is very ridiculous. I think he belongs in the top 40. But putting his names up beside DM and Calzaghe is a disgrace, those guys wouldn't even make the top 100.
It's the right decision. Calzaghe didn't have much technical skills at all, as soon as he couldn't throw blizzards for 12 rounds he'd take a pounding. And obviously a prime Jones would have took him to school.
Its can to see someones get out of the sport well, a sport which can rob you mentally and physically.
As an aside despite all his talent Jones will probably end life with severe brain damage and in poor health, I think the guy has shown mild signs of punch drunkeness already.
