I was kinda hoping it would trend towards fights like Ricky Hatton vs. Joe Manley and Billy Costello. We all know Hatton schools Ortiz.
hattons been in more hypotheical matchups then Jack Dempsey... As for the question...I'm not familar enough with Oritz to venture a guess.
M.S. was asking someone to post these threads and I encouraged him to join and ask the questions himself. If he is interested in Hatton's career and how it compares in relation to other fighters over the last 30 years at 140, in the eyes of others....We all have areas of both expertise and areas we are curious about and desire a greater knowledge of. I think ESB is a great thing where we can engage in those conversations that interest us, and avoid the ones that don't. Persoanlly I hope he does not get discouraged or criticized for asking questions that are important to him...we can always avoid hatton threads if they are reduntand or tiresome. Anyway as for this match-up I think Hatton would present him alot of trouble due to the pressure he brings, but think Ortiz would take a UD in a close fight.
I think Hatton's speed of hand/foot, aggression and quick start sees him take an early lead before Ortiz starts to time him and land some. Ortiz is a league above him technically but so was Tyszu/Castillo and Ricky's speed neutralised the puncher and put him on the back foot. If that happens here a Prime Ortiz is better than those 2 men but it would be a back and forth war between both men. Ortiz's better more powerful technical straighter punching may well see him KO Ricky but its not a given, especially as Ricky is most likely the bigger stronger man. I think Ricky matches up well with men he beats for speed
^ Sure if they are slow as molasses simpletons like Maussa or Urango. Ortiz holds 2 wins over one of the most fleet footed lightweights ever...He just simply had an answer to everything that faced him in the ring. Ricky's lunges and defensive deficiencies wont see him stay particularly competitive for long...Though his conditioning and determination will keep him on his feet for a while, maybe till to the final bell.
He said that was his toughest fight. Hatton cancels the fight and asks Ortiz for an autograph instead.
This is the best and most fair praise that one can give to Ortiz. The way he beat Joe Brown is evidence of it, hardly a thrilling fight, but he just had gameplans he could stick to, and he was versatile. He could exert non-stop aggresion, he could focus on body and head, he could move sideways, he could step in and out pot-shotting with jabs, he could fence at distance. Ortiz is the man.
You mean slow as molasses simpletons like Kostya Tyszu and Castillo? People seem to ignore those wins now or write them off. Ortiz beat fast fleet footed boxers yes, but this is a fast aggressive boxer who could take his punch away by putting him on the backfoot. Totally different style, I'm not picking Hatton here and yes he may get smashed with counters on the way in, but a great counter puncher in Tyszu didn't manage to do that to him so no guarantee Ortiz does
Tyszu was 35 when he fought Wicky and his last win before that was a stoppage a year before against shot Sharmba Mitchell, whom he had stopped previously.Plus Dave Parriss allowed Wicky to do all kinds of filth without even warning him.If prime Hatton v prime Kostya were part of the Ortiz-Hatton debate, this thread wouldn't even exist. On top of that,I don't know why Castillo showed up unless just to get the payday because he looked like he didn't want to be there in the 1st place.
